About Circuit Zolder
Circuit Zolder is a permanent motorsport racing facility located in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium. The circuit opened on June 19, 1963, making it Belgium's first purpose-built racing track. Designer John Hugenholtz created the original layout, which was known as "Omloop van Terlaemen." The track sits within a wooded area on the outskirts of the town, running adjacent to the Albert Canal. Over six decades, Circuit Zolder has established itself as a technical and challenging venue that tests driver precision and vehicle performance.
Track Layout and Technical Specifications
The current Grand Prix circuit measures 4.011 kilometers (2.492 miles) in length and contains 10 to 11 turns. The track width measures 14.1 meters. Circuit Zolder features elevation changes between 14 and 20 meters across a single lap, creating an undulating surface that affects grip levels and driver visibility. The FIA has certified the circuit with Grade 2 homologation, which allows it to host international events including World Endurance Championship races.
The main straight extends approximately 550 meters and provides the primary overtaking zone. Drivers use slipstreaming and late braking into Turn 1, a medium-speed right-hander that requires precise brake application and exit speed management. The Villeneuve Chicane stands as one of the most technical sections. Added in 1986 following the 1982 tragedy, this tight chicane demands accurate curb usage and strict track limit adherence. Terlamenbocht (Turn 7) is a high-speed sweeping corner that pushes tire grip to its limits. The Jacky Ickx Chicane precedes the main straight and requires precise braking and vehicle balance. Sacramentsheuvel presents a unique challenge with an uphill climb leading into a chicane, followed by a steep downhill section. The circuit enforces a noise limit of 96 dbA at two measurement points, though this restriction is often lifted during international test days and race weekends.
Formula One and Major Racing History
Circuit Zolder hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix ten times between 1973 and 1984. The circuit served as Belgium's primary F1 venue during periods when Spa-Francorchamps faced renovations or organizational difficulties. The 1978 Belgian Grand Prix marked the race debut of the Lotus 79, with Mario Andretti claiming pole position by more than 1.5 seconds. The 1981 race weekend saw tragedy strike the confined pitlane, resulting in the death of Osella mechanic Giovanni Amadeo. The 1982 Belgian Grand Prix remains the circuit's most tragic event. Gilles Villeneuve suffered a fatal accident during qualifying when his Ferrari collided with Jochen Mass's March at high speed. A replica helmet in the pit lane serves as a permanent memorial.
Before Formula One arrived, the circuit hosted Formula Two races in the 1960s with winners including Denny Hulme and Sir Jack Brabham. In 1964, a famous battle between Ferraris and Cobras took place at Zolder. Autosport magazine called this event "The Chase."
Modern Racing and Multi-Sport Use
Circuit Zolder continues to host diverse motorsport categories. DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) raced there in 2019 and 2021. The FIA WTCR (World Touring Car Cup) visited in 2020. The Champ Car World Series held a race in 2007. The FIA GT Championship ran events from 1999-2001 and 2007-2009. The NASCAR Euro Series has competed at Zolder since 2015. The 24 Hours of Zolder provides an annual endurance racing highlight. The circuit also hosts the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, World Series by Renault (2003-2006), and the Masters of Formula 3 (2007-2008).
Beyond motorsport, Circuit Zolder functions as a multi-sport venue. It has hosted the UCI Road World Championships (1969, 2002), UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships (1970, 2002, 2016), and UCI BMX World Championships (2015, 2019). The modern facility includes a spacious paddock, updated garages, TecPro barriers, tire walls, and a medical center meeting FIA Grade 2 standards. Spectator areas offer excellent viewing positions from multiple locations around the track.
