About Losail International Circuit
Built in just under a year at a cost of US $58 million, the Lusail International Circuit emerged from the Qatari desert in 2004. The ambitious project required nearly 1,000 workers working around the clock to complete the facility, which was specifically designed with motorcycling in mind.
Circuit Characteristics
The 5.419-kilometer circuit features a flowing layout with a distinctive mix of medium and high-speed corners. A standout feature is its main straight, stretching over a kilometer in length. To combat the desert environment, the track is surrounded by artificial grass, preventing sand from blowing onto the racing surface.
Innovative Lighting System
In 2008, Lusail pioneered night racing by installing a comprehensive permanent lighting system, which was at the time the largest lit venue in motorsport. The installation by Musco Lighting involved over 1,000 structures, 3 million kilos of concrete, and 500km of wire, creating perfect conditions for night racing while managing challenges like glare and shadows.
Formula One Debut and Upgrades
The circuit made its Formula One debut in 2021 as a replacement for the cancelled Australian Grand Prix. Before hosting F1 again in 2023, the venue underwent significant upgrades, including a complete remodeling of pit and paddock buildings. The new facilities feature the world's longest pit building, accommodating 50 teams, and improved spectator areas including the new Lusail Hill overlooking Turn 1.
Multiple Configurations
Following the 2023 renovations, the circuit now offers multiple layout options. Besides the main Grand Prix circuit, there's a short course that bypasses Turns 2-10, and a club racing variation with its own pit and paddock facilities. This flexibility allows for simultaneous events on different circuit configurations.
Major Events
The circuit hosts prestigious international events including Formula One, MotoGP, and from 2024, the FIA World Endurance Championship with its unique Qatar 1812km race - a nod to Qatar's National Day. The venue has become a cornerstone of international motorsport in the Middle East, consistently delivering exciting racing across multiple disciplines.
