About Queensland Raceway

Queensland Raceway stands as one of Australia's most distinctive motor racing venues. Located in Willowbank, Ipswich, approximately 50 kilometers west of Brisbane, this circuit opened in 1999 and quickly became a staple in Australian motorsport. Locals and racing enthusiasts know it as "The Paperclip" due to its simple yet challenging layout. The track's design maximizes straight sections with sharp turns, creating a circuit that tests drivers' braking and acceleration skills.

History and Ownership

The circuit began operations in 1999 under Motorsport Queensland's management. In 2004, John Tetley took ownership and ran the facility for 17 years until October 2021, when businessman and motorsport enthusiast Tony Quinn purchased the track. The raceway forms part of the larger Ipswich Motorsport Precinct, which includes Willowbank Raceway drag strip, a kart track, and other motorsport facilities. Its location next to RAAF Base Amberley means the circuit operates without strict noise restrictions, a significant advantage for a motorsport venue.

Track Design and Layout

Tony Slattery designed Queensland Raceway with input from motorsport authorities and CAMS circuit expert Professor Rod Troutbeck. The design follows a simple principle: create long straights leading into tight corners to produce excellent overtaking opportunities. The track runs clockwise and features six distinct turns, each with unique characteristics. This FIA Grade 3 circuit combines technical challenges with high-speed sections, making it a favorite testing ground for teams and drivers.

Technical Specifications

The main National Circuit measures 3.126 kilometers (1.942 miles) with a consistent width of 12 meters. The facility offers four different configurations: - National Circuit: 3.126 km, 6 turns (main layout) - Sportsman Circuit: 2.150 km, 7 turns - Clubman Circuit: 2.110 km, 7 turns - Sprint Circuit: 1.890 km, 7 turns The track's lap record stands at 1:04.0661, set by Simon Wills in a Reynard 94D Formula Holden in 1999, demonstrating the circuit's potential for speed despite its simple layout.

Circuit Features

Queensland Raceway's flat terrain and open design provide excellent visibility for spectators. The circuit features long straights connected by six corners of different profiles, creating varied driving challenges. Strategic spectator mounds around the track offer clear views of multiple sections. The track surface delivers consistent grip levels, though its Queensland location means drivers often face hot conditions that affect tire management and vehicle performance.

Racing Heritage

The circuit hosted Supercars Championship events from its opening until 2019, including the Queensland 500 from 1999-2002. Craig Lowndes holds the record for most race wins at the track with 12 victories. Beyond Supercars, Queensland Raceway hosts the Australian Superbike Championship, GT World Challenge Australia, drifting events including Drift Matsuri, and numerous club-level competitions. The circuit will return to the Supercars calendar in 2025, marking its renewed importance in Australian motorsport.

Recent Developments

Since Tony Quinn's acquisition in 2021, the facility has undergone improvements including upgraded pit facilities and new ripple strips on corner exits. Quinn has announced plans for further development to enhance the circuit's facilities and potentially expand its layout. These improvements aim to secure Queensland Raceway's position as a key motorsport venue in Australia for professional events and amateur motorsport enthusiasts alike.
