About Streets Of Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Strip Circuit, located in Paradise, Nevada, adjacent to Las Vegas, is a hybrid street circuit that opened on November 16, 2023. Designed by Carsten Tilke, this FIA Grade 1 circuit combines a permanent pit and paddock complex with existing city streets. The circuit represents a significant example of modern motorsport's shift toward urban racing venues, joining a growing number of street circuits that now comprise approximately 33% of Formula 1 races scheduled for 2026.
Track Layout and Design
The circuit measures 3.853 miles (6.201 km) in length and runs counterclockwise through 17 turns. The layout underwent revision after its initial announcement in March 2022, with an additional chicane added to the final design. The most distinctive feature is the 1.2-mile (1.9 km) straight along Las Vegas Boulevard, where cars pass iconic landmarks including the MSG Sphere, Caesars Palace, and the Bellagio Fountains. The permanent pit and paddock facility was constructed on a former parking lot purchased by Formula 1 for $240 million, part of an estimated $500 million total investment in the circuit infrastructure.
Performance Characteristics
The Las Vegas Strip Circuit operates as a high-speed, low-downforce track with average speeds comparable to Monza, Formula 1's traditional speed benchmark. Top speeds regularly exceed 215 mph (346 km/h), with Alex Albon recording 229 mph (369 km/h) in 2024. The circuit features two DRS zones, with Turn 14—the left-hander at the end of the Strip—serving as a primary overtaking location. The 2023 inaugural race produced 183 overtakes, demonstrating the circuit's capacity for competitive racing despite being a street circuit.
Unique Challenges
As a night race, the circuit presents specific technical challenges. Cooler temperatures make tire warm-up difficult and affect brake performance. The cold operating windows for both tires and brakes contribute to unpredictable opening laps. However, the night setting creates a spectacular visual environment, with illuminated landmarks and neon lights providing a unique backdrop. The circuit design went through 31 variations before final approval, balancing speed requirements with safety considerations.
Recent Developments
For the 2025 event, organizers addressed issues with temporary bridges from the inaugural year by installing stronger metal cladding. New spectator grandstands and viewing experiences were introduced. The surrounding cityscape continues to evolve, with new constructions like the Hard Rock Cafe guitar tower and Omnia Day Club and Night Club changing the visual scenery along the route.
Racing History and Events
The inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix took place on November 18, 2023, with Max Verstappen winning the race. Oscar Piastri set the current lap record of 1:35.490 during that event. The circuit marks Formula 1's return to Las Vegas after races held at Caesars Palace in 1981 and 1982. Beyond Formula 1, the circuit hosts F1 Academy (starting in 2025) and Ferrari Challenge North America (since 2024).
Technical Specifications
The circuit features a repaved asphalt surface meeting Formula 1 standards. Track width maintains the minimum requirement of 40 feet throughout. The 300,000-square-foot Pit Building includes viewing platforms and large video screens for spectators. The circuit remains the only Formula 1 venue in North America built on city streets that function as public roads during non-race periods.
