Sydney Motorsport Park

Sydney Motorsport Park stands as the premier racing facility in New South Wales, Australia, located about 40 kilometers west of Sydney's central business district in Eastern Creek. The circuit opened on November 10, 1990, as Eastern Creek International Raceway and received its current name in May 2012 following major redevelopment. The New South Wales Government owns the facility, while the Australian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) operates it. Sydney Motorsport Park holds both an FIA Grade 2 license and an FIM Class B license, making it the only permanent track in Australia with both international accreditations.

Track Layout and Configurations

The circuit features multiple configurations, all running in an anti-clockwise direction. The Gardner GP Circuit extends 3.91 kilometers (2.43 miles) and contains 11 turns. This original Grand Prix layout features challenging bends and high-speed cornering, particularly at Turn 1. The Brabham Extended Circuit spans 4.5 kilometers (2.796 miles) with 18 turns. This layout incorporates an 830-meter extension called the Amaroo Circuit, added during the 2012 upgrade. The extension creates a more twisting and technical challenge for drivers. For smaller events or simultaneous operations, the track divides into two circuits. The Druitt North Circuit forms from the northern section of the track. The Amaroo South Circuit measures 1.8 kilometers and offers a short, sharp, and technical experience. This configuration flexibility allows the facility to host multiple events at the same time.

Technical Specifications

The track surface consists of hot mix bitumen, providing excellent grip in various weather conditions. The main straight measures 15 meters wide, narrowing to 12 meters through the remainder of the circuit. This width variation creates additional challenges during overtaking maneuvers. The Brabham Straight allows vehicles to reach speeds up to 290 km/h before braking for Turn 1, a fast sweeping corner that tests driver commitment. The facility includes a large floodable concrete skidpan, a figure-8 skid circuit, and a 4WD off-road course. These features support driver safety training, education programs, and vehicle testing. In 2020, the circuit installed permanent lighting around the entire course. This broadcast-standard lighting system enables night racing events that have become popular with fans and drivers.

Racing History and Major Events

Sydney Motorsport Park has hosted many significant racing events since opening. The circuit hosted the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from 1991 to 1996. Since 1992, it has featured regularly on the Supercars Championship calendar. Other notable events include GT World Challenge Australia and World Time Attack Challenge. Thrifty has become a significant partner in recent years. The "Thrifty Sydney 500" kicked off the Supercars season at the venue in 2025. Thrifty continues their partnership as the Official Car Rental Partner of Supercars through 2027. The Sydney SuperNight event has established itself as a highlight on the racing calendar, taking advantage of the permanent lighting installation.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The venue offers a 4,000-seat grandstand overlooking the start/finish line. Spectators enjoy excellent views of the main straight and pit lane from this vantage point. The facility includes garages for 50 competitors, a race control tower, media center, VIP suites, and corporate areas. Two separate pit and paddock areas allow for simultaneous events on different circuit configurations. The 2011-2012 upgrade cost A$9 million and transformed the facility into a versatile complex. Today, Sydney Motorsport Park hosts over 650 events annually and welcomes more than 350,000 visitors, serving as a central hub for Australian motorsport.
