About Townsville

The Townsville Street Circuit, also called Reid Park Street Circuit, is a semi-permanent racing facility in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This circuit opened in 2009 and has become a popular venue for drivers and racing fans. The track combines purpose-built roads with existing city streets to create a challenging racing environment. The circuit sits near the waterfront and offers views of the Coral Sea, making it a visually distinctive venue on the Australian motorsport calendar.

Technical Specifications

The circuit measures 2.860 kilometers (1.777 miles) in length and contains 13 turns. The track holds an FIA Grade 3 rating. Around 70 percent of the circuit consists of specially constructed roads built within Reid Park, while the remaining 30 percent uses public streets including Boundary Street and Charters Towers Road. This hybrid design is similar to Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit. The track features a bridge that crosses Ross Creek, positioned next to the Townsville railway station. The circuit has an elevation change of 12 meters from its lowest to highest points.

Drivers maintain an average speed of 144 km/h around the circuit. Top speeds reach 260 km/h on the approach to Turn 2, which represents the fastest section of the track. The slowest sections occur mid-corner at Turns 11 and 13. Turn 1 has earned comparisons to Turn 8 at the Adelaide Street Circuit, a high-speed corner that provides strong overtaking opportunities.

Racing History

The circuit joined the V8 Supercars calendar (now Supercars Championship) in 2009 and has hosted the Townsville 500 event annually since then. The inaugural Dunlop Townsville 400 took place in July 2009 and attracted approximately 150,000 spectators across three days. Jamie Whincup won the first-ever race at the circuit, a 200-kilometer event. James Courtney won the Sunday race. Whincup has dominated at this venue, winning five of the first ten races and achieving a record 12 victories overall.

The circuit has hosted multiple supporting categories including Super2 Series, Super3 Series, Aussie Racing Cars, Porsche Sprint Challenge Australia, Touring Car Masters, Australian GT, Australian Formula 4, and Carrera Cup Australia. During 2020 and 2021, the circuit hosted double-header Supercars events due to COVID-19 calendar changes. Christopher Mies from Germany set the outright lap record of 1:11.9875 in 2016, driving an Audi R8 LMS GT3 during an Australian GT Championship race.

Circuit Features and Infrastructure

The pit building and much of the infrastructure within Reid Park are permanent structures. These facilities remain in place year-round and host various events outside of racing weekends. The semi-permanent sections of the circuit require significant setup and takedown work. Crews install 1,295 concrete blocks and 1,545 debris fence panels to create the temporary sections. The build process takes approximately six weeks before each event, while dismantling requires three weeks.

Spectator facilities include multiple grandstands and five viewing mounds placed around the circuit, providing seating for approximately 12,000 people. The circuit offers good sightlines for fans to watch the racing action.

Economic Impact and Notable Facts

The circuit development required an investment of nearly AUD $30 million, supported by state and local governments. The event generates an estimated economic benefit of AUD $32.5 million for the region. The race typically occurs in early July, coinciding with school holidays for Townsville State High School, which borders the track. In 2019, flooding in Townsville affected parts of the circuit infrastructure.
