βΉοΈ About Bahrain GP
The Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 returns to the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. This race marks another chapter for F1 in Bahrain, where drivers compete under floodlights on one of motorsport's most respected circuits. The event brings together 11 teams with new technical regulations that will change how F1 cars perform on track.
Bahrain International Circuit
The Bahrain International Circuit sits in Sakhir, near Manama, Bahrain. The circuit stretches 5.412 kilometers and features 15 turns that test driver skill and car performance. Drivers complete 57 laps for a total race distance of 308.238 kilometers.
The facility opened in 2004 and became the first venue in the Middle East to host a Formula 1 race. The circuit offers five FIA-certified track layouts. Large run-off areas and modern safety features make it one of the safest circuits in F1. Turn 1 bears the name of Michael Schumacher, while Turn 10 presents the most difficult challenge with its tight, downhill, off-camber left-hander.
Special adhesive keeps desert sand from covering the track surface. The circuit was built at a cost of approximately $150 million and includes the Bahrain International Karting Circuit next to the main facility.
The 2026 Formula 1 Cars
The 2026 season introduces major technical changes to F1 cars. The power units now split energy equally between the combustion engine and battery system. All cars run on renewable fuels. The MGU-H component has been removed, while a more powerful MGU-K takes over energy recovery duties.
Cars are lighter, shorter, and narrower than previous seasons. The minimum weight drops to 768 kilograms. The wheelbase measures 3,400 millimeters, and the width reduces to 1,900 millimeters. These changes affect how cars handle on track.
Active aerodynamics replace the DRS system. Drivers can adjust front and rear wing elements to create an overtake mode. This system changes racing strategy and wheel-to-wheel battles. The 18-inch wheels remain, but tyre width decreases. Safety improvements include stronger side intrusion protection around the cockpit and fuel cell, plus reinforced roll hoops.
Teams and Drivers
Eleven teams compete in the 2026 Bahrain GP. Cadillac joins as a new entry to F1. McLaren fields Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes pairs George Russell with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Red Bull Racing puts Max Verstappen alongside Isack Hadjar.
Ferrari runs Lewis Hamilton with Charles Leclerc. Williams brings Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon. Racing Bulls features Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Aston Martin continues with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Haas fields Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman. Audi enters F1 with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto. Alpine races with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Cadillac completes the grid with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
A Historic Race
Bahrain made history when it hosted the first F1 race in the Middle East. The country won the bid against competition from Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. Night racing began at this circuit to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
The race has secured its future with a contract extension through 2036. This long-term commitment shows the strong relationship between F1 and Bahrain. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most victories at this circuit.
Unique Features
The Bahrain GP offers distinct characteristics that set it apart from other races. The night race format under floodlights creates dramatic visuals and cooler track temperatures. Drivers race after sunset, which affects tyre behavior and car setup.
Winners celebrate with Waard instead of champagne. This non-alcoholic rosewater drink respects local customs while maintaining the victory ceremony tradition. The podium celebration remains a special moment with this regional touch.
The circuit's multiple configurations allow different racing experiences. Track officials can modify the layout for various motorsport events. This flexibility makes the facility valuable beyond the annual F1 race. The combination of technical challenges, modern facilities, and night racing makes the Bahrain GP a significant event on the F1 calendar.
