The Indianapolis 500 stands as the premier race in the IndyCar Series, held at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis. This 500-mile contest features 33 drivers competing on a 2.5-mile rectangular oval track, racing 200 laps to victory. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, known for its famous yard of bricks at the finish line, holds over 257,000 permanent seats, making it the largest sports venue in the world.
For the 109th running, Josef Newgarden returns as the defending champion, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive Indianapolis 500 win. The field includes rookies Louis Foster, Robert Shwartzman, and Nolan Siegel, with Shwartzman claiming the pole position. Former winners Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, and Will Power aim to add another victory to their records.
The Indianapolis 500 showcases Dallara IR-12 chassis with IR-18 aero kits powered by 2.2L V6 twin-turbocharged engines from Chevrolet and Honda. The cars produce between 550-700 horsepower and create 5,000 pounds of downforce at 220 mph. New hybrid energy recovery systems make their debut at this year's race, adding a technological advancement to the competition.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit features four turns banked at 9 degrees, two long straightaways, and two short chutes. The track surface consists of asphalt with the original brick strip preserved at the start/finish line, honoring the speedway's history as "The Brickyard."
Since its first race in 1911, the Indianapolis 500 has built rich traditions, including the winner drinking milk and kissing the yard of bricks. Four drivers share the record for most wins with four victories each: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., Rick Mears, and Hélio Castroneves. The race forms part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Monaco Grand Prix.
The Indianapolis 500 brings together top teams like Team Penske, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Andretti Global in fierce competition. Kyle Larson attempts "Double Duty" for the second time, racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. This race promises spectacular wheel-to-wheel action as drivers push their limits around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.
