Get NotifiedAbout Indianapolis 8 Hour
The Indianapolis 8 Hour represents a major endurance sports car race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This event serves as Round 5 and the season finale for the Intercontinental GT Challenge, and it also concludes the GT World Challenge America series. The Indianapolis 8 Hour stands as the only Intercontinental GT Challenge event held in the United States.
Race Format and Duration
The Indianapolis 8 Hour is an endurance race that runs for eight hours. The race typically begins in daylight and continues into the night. Only GT3-specification cars compete for the overall victory, which creates a pure GT battle without prototypes. The weekend features support races from GT America, GT4 America, Toyota GR Cup, and McLaren Trophy series.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Circuit
The race takes place on the 2.439-mile infield road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This circuit features 14 turns and holds an FIA Grade 1 license. The Speedway was originally paved with 3.2 million bricks in 1909, earning it the nickname "The Brickyard." While most of the track is now asphalt, a symbolic yard of bricks remains at the start/finish line.
Venue History and Capacity
Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and is recognized as the oldest continuously operating racetrack worldwide. The venue is the largest sports venue globally, with permanent seating capacity of approximately 257,000. This capacity can expand to around 400,000 with infield seating. The Speedway is one of only three tracks worldwide to host races that are part of motorsport's Triple Crown. The 10-story Pagoda serves as the race control tower and provides panoramic views of the entire track.
Participants and Manufacturers
Six manufacturers have been confirmed for the 2026 Intercontinental GT Challenge campaign. The Indianapolis 8 Hour attracts top-tier international and North American teams and drivers. Previous editions have featured participation from leading GT3 manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Acura, and Chevrolet. Competitors race across IGTC Pro, GT World Challenge America Pro, and Pro-Am classes.
Driver Regulations
GT World Challenge America entries can field a maximum of three drivers. Cars additionally competing in IGTC have a reduced maximum of two Gold or Platinum drivers. Drivers must participate for a minimum of 25 minutes to be eligible for championship points. Individual drive time cannot exceed 3 hours and 15 minutes. Stint lengths are typically limited to 65 minutes, with a potential extension to 70 minutes under caution periods.
Technical Specifications
The Indianapolis 8 Hour is exclusively for GT3-specification cars. The GT4 class was removed from the event in 2022. Technical regulations are based on the FIA International Sporting Code, its appendices, and specific Intercontinental GT Challenge Sporting Regulations. These regulations ensure a level playing field among various GT3 models, including the BMW M4 GT3, Porsche 911 GT3R, and Ferrari 296 GT3.
Tire Supply
Pirelli supplies over 3,000 tires for the event, including both slicks and rain tires. This extensive tire allocation supports the demanding eight-hour race format.
Event History
The Indianapolis 8 Hour was first held in 2020, marking the first endurance sports car race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event replaced the California 8 Hours at Laguna Seca as the United States leg of the IGTC. Team WRT has been particularly successful, securing three consecutive victories from 2023 to 2025. BMW is the most successful manufacturer with four wins. The marque captured the inaugural race in 2020 and won in 2025, clinching their first IGTC Manufacturers' Championship. Audi won in 2021 and Mercedes-AMG claimed victory in 2022. Porsche is still seeking its first overall victory at this event.
What Makes This Event Special
The Indianapolis 8 Hour combines endurance racing with one of motorsport's most famous venues. The transition from daylight to night racing adds strategic complexity to the competition. The track has been the site of numerous speed records, including the first 100 mph lap in 1911. The pure GT3 format ensures close competition among different manufacturers and teams. This event promises intense battles as teams and drivers compete for championship glory at the season finale.
