ℹ️ About Algarve
The FIM Moto2 World Championship Portuguese Grand Prix takes place at the Algarve Motor Park, officially known as the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. This race represents the intermediate class of the FIM Road Racing World Championship season. The Algarve circuit hosts riders and teams competing on road circuits sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme.
The Algarve Motor Park is located near Portimão in the Algarve region of Portugal. The circuit opened on November 2, 2008, and has earned both FIA and FIM homologation for the highest level of motorsports competitions. The track measures 4.592 kilometers in length and features between 15 and 17 corners, including nine right-handers and six to seven left-handers. The track width spans 14 meters, with the longest straight extending 969 meters.
What sets this Algarve circuit apart is its significant elevation changes. The track rises by a maximum of 6.2% and falls by up to 12.0%, creating a challenging layout that many compare to a roller-coaster. The designers drew inspiration from famous European circuits like Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps. This combination of high-speed straights and technical corners creates varied racing conditions. The circuit offers 32 different track configurations and provides spectators with clear views from any grandstand position.
The Moto2 race covers approximately one hundred kilometers. Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers, with the winner receiving 25 points, second place earning 20 points, and third place collecting 16 points. The points system continues down to 15th position, which earns one point. These points contribute to both the riders' championship and teams' standings throughout the season.
All Moto2 bikes use identical 765cc three-cylinder Triumph engines that produce approximately 140 horsepower. The combined minimum weight of bike and rider must reach 217 kilograms, with the bike alone weighing 150 kilograms. Pirelli serves as the official tire supplier, and riders must complete each race weekend with eight front tires and nine rear tires. All teams use the same electronic management system, though chassis selection remains unrestricted. The regulations require steel brake discs, as carbon brake discs are banned from the class.
The 2025 Moto2 grid features multiple competitive teams and riders. MT Helmets-MSI fields Sergio Garcia and Ivan Ortola on Boscoscuro chassis. Italtrans Racing Team runs Diogo Moreira and Adrian Huertas on Kalex machinery. SpeedUp Racing campaigns Celestino Vietti and Alonso Lopez, while Elf Marc VDS Racing Team operates Filip Salač and Jake Dixon. CFMoto Aspar Team brings Daniel Holgado and David Alonso to the series. Red Bull KTM Ajo enters Deniz Oncu and Collin Veijer. Other teams include Pramac Yamaha Moto2, Gresini Moto2, OnlyFans American Racing Team, and Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP.
The Algarve Motor Park forms part of a larger complex called the Algarve Motorsports Park. This facility includes a karting track, an off-road park that opened in 2011, a hotel, an apartment complex, a technology park, and a sports complex. The venue can accommodate 100,000 spectators and features a VIP tower, hospitality suites, and divisible rooms for various functions.
Paulo Pinheiro, a mechanical engineer and motorsports fan, created this circuit. The construction took just seven months to complete. The inaugural race was the final round of the Superbike World Championship in November 2008. MotoGP made its debut at this Algarve venue in 2020. The circuit achieved FIA Grade 1 status and hosted the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix in both 2020 and 2021. The Amazon Prime series "The Grand Tour" filmed its debut episode at the Algarve Motor Park in 2016.
The Portuguese Grand Prix at Algarve Motor Park offers fans a chance to watch intermediate-class riders compete on one of Europe's most challenging circuits. The combination of technical corners, elevation changes, and high-speed sections creates varied racing action. The circuit's modern facilities and capacity provide a comprehensive experience for those following the Moto2 series. This race contributes to the championship standings and showcases the talent of riders competing in this competitive class.
