About Mugello

The Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello in Italy hosts the Moto3 class as part of the Italian Grand Prix in 2026. This edition marks the final year for the current Moto3 technical regulations before significant changes arrive in 2027. The circuit sits among the Tuscan hills near Scarperia e San Piero, offering riders one of the most challenging and scenic venues on the calendar.

The Mugello Circuit

The Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello measures 5.245 kilometers (3.259 miles) and features 15 turns. The layout includes 9 right-hand corners and 6 left-hand corners. The main straight extends 1.141 kilometers (0.709 miles), creating opportunities for premier class motorcycles to exceed 350 km/h.

The track incorporates a total elevation change of 41.19 meters. This elevation variation, combined with sweeping high-speed corners and off-camber sections, creates a demanding environment for riders and engineers. Ferrari has owned the circuit since 1988 and has invested in extensive renovations. The facility now ranks among the most modern and safest race circuits globally, with wide escape routes and stadium stands accommodating 50,000 spectators.

Mugello earned recognition as the most sustainable racetrack globally in a 2021 report. The circuit holds 3-star FIA Environmental Accreditation and several ISO certifications. The corners carry names inspired by local historical places and figures, including San Donato, Luco, Poggio Secco, and Materassi.

Moto3 Competition in 2026

The Moto3 class serves as the entry-level category in the FIM MotoGP World Championship. This class provides a proving ground for young riders who aim to advance to higher categories. Moto3 races feature highly competitive action, with multiple riders frequently battling for positions throughout the race.

Technical Specifications for 2026

Moto3 motorcycles use single-cylinder, 250cc four-stroke engines with a maximum cylinder bore of 81 mm. These are prototype engines built specifically for competition. The minimum combined weight for the motorcycle and rider stands at 148 kg.

Key manufacturers competing in the Moto3 class include Honda, KTM, GasGas, and Husqvarna. Regulations maintain strict controls to keep costs manageable and ensure balanced performance across all manufacturers. Pirelli supplies tires for the Moto3 class. A spec ECU is mandatory for all competitors in 2026. Aerodynamic parts are permitted but must follow strict regulations regarding homologated shapes and modifications.

Mugello's Racing Heritage

The permanent circuit opened in 1974 after construction in 1973. The venue hosted its first Grand Prix motorcycle racing event in 1976. After significant refurbishment, Mugello became a permanent fixture for the Italian Grand Prix in 1991. The Moto3 class replaced the 125cc two-stroke class in 2012 and has continued the tradition of close racing at this Italian venue.

Moto3 races at Mugello regularly feature tight competition. The high performance of the bikes combined with the challenging nature of the circuit often leads to competitive lap times. The passionate Italian crowd creates a vibrant atmosphere that enhances the racing spectacle.

What Makes Mugello Special

Beyond hosting the Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix, Mugello hosted a Formula One race, the Tuscan Grand Prix, in 2020. That event marked Scuderia Ferrari's 1000th Grand Prix. Ferrari regularly uses the circuit for Formula One testing and development work.

The circuit's blend of fast corners and dramatic elevation changes sets it apart. The picturesque setting in the Tuscan countryside provides a stunning backdrop for racing. Riders consistently rank Mugello among their favorite circuits due to its flowing layout and technical demands.

The 2026 Moto3 race at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello promises intense competition as riders and teams make the most of the final season under current technical regulations. The combination of a world-class circuit, talented young riders, and the passionate Italian fanbase creates an event that showcases the best of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
