H. Clay Earles founded Martinsville Speedway in 1947. The track hosted its first race on September 7, 1947, before NASCAR's official formation. Martinsville joined the NASCAR schedule in 1949, hosting a Cup Series race on September 25, 1949, won by Red Byron. The track holds a unique distinction: it has hosted NASCAR Cup Series races every year since the division began in 1949, making it the only track with this continuous history.

The track started as a dirt oval. In 1955, workers paved the surface with asphalt. The current concrete-and-asphalt combination was added later to improve durability in the corners. In 2017, Martinsville Speedway installed permanent lighting, expanding race scheduling options after successful temporary lighting tests beginning in 2005.
