About Losail
The Losail International Circuit hosts the FIA World Endurance Championship season opener in 2026. Located north of Doha, Qatar, this facility brings together top manufacturers and racing teams for the Qatar 1812 KM race. The circuit features a permanent outdoor lighting system that allows for night racing sessions, creating a unique atmosphere for endurance racing competition.
About the Qatar 1812 KM Race
The race at Losail carries the name Qatar 1812 KM in honor of Qatar National Day, celebrated on December 18th. This WEC event runs under a 10-hour time limit and features two main categories: Hypercar and LMGT3. The 2026 season includes eight rounds across different continents, with Losail International Circuit serving as the championship's opening venue.
A Prologue test session precedes the race weekend, giving teams valuable track time to analyze performance data and prepare their cars for the season ahead. Teams use these sessions to study fuel consumption patterns, tire degradation rates, and component reliability under race conditions.
Losail International Circuit Details
The circuit stretches 5.419 kilometers and includes 16 corners, with 10 right-hand turns and 6 left-hand turns. The main straight measures 1.068 kilometers, providing opportunities for slipstreaming and overtaking maneuvers. The track maintains an FIA Grade 1 certification and features minimal elevation changes throughout its layout.
The track surface was resurfaced in 2023, providing consistent grip levels for the racing machines. The circuit width measures approximately 12 meters, and artificial grass surrounds the facility to prevent desert sand from reaching the racing surface. This design choice addresses the environmental challenges specific to Qatar's desert location.
Night Racing Capability
Permanent outdoor lighting installed in 2007 enables the circuit to host night sessions. This system was the largest permanent venue sports lighting project globally at the time of installation. The lighting allows the WEC race to take advantage of cooler evening temperatures while creating a distinctive visual spectacle.
Hypercar Category Competitors
The Hypercar class brings together manufacturers competing under Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh) regulations. Porsche, Ferrari, Toyota, Cadillac, Aston Martin, Peugeot, Alpine, and BMW field entries in this premier category. Genesis Magma Racing joins the championship with their GMR-001 entries, adding another manufacturer to the competitive field.
These manufacturers represent the pinnacle of endurance racing technology, each bringing different engineering approaches to meet the technical regulations. The variety of entries creates close competition throughout the race distance.
LMGT3 Category Competition
The LMGT3 class features customer racing teams running production-based GT cars. Competing manufacturers include Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. This category provides a platform for teams to demonstrate their racing capabilities with more accessible machinery than the top Hypercar class.
Technical Regulations and Challenges
The WEC implements a compensation ballast system to minimize weight differences between cars based on individual driver weight. Regulations add ballast to achieve a minimum average weight of 82 kilograms across three drivers, ensuring fairer competition.
Qatar's desert environment presents specific challenges for teams and drivers. High temperatures and humidity levels affect engine performance, aerodynamic efficiency, and tire behavior. Teams must account for these factors in their setup choices and race strategy planning.
Circuit History
Construction of Losail International Circuit took just under a year, with the facility opening in 2004 at a cost of US$58 million. The inaugural Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix took place in 2004, marking the venue's first major racing event. The WEC first visited the circuit in 2024.
Losail International Circuit remains Qatar's only motorsport facility, serving as the nation's hub for racing activities. The circuit layout combines fast corners with technical sections, testing both driver skill and car setup.
What Makes This Event Special
The combination of night racing under floodlights, a diverse manufacturer entry list, and the desert setting creates a distinctive character for the Losail WEC race. The 10-hour duration tests both machine reliability and driver stamina across different track conditions as temperatures change throughout the race.
Three-day tickets provide access to the Main Grandstand, Lusail Hill viewing zone at Turn 1, and the Fan Zone. Students and senior citizens may qualify for ticket discounts, while children under 12 can attend free with an adult. These access points offer different perspectives on the racing action around the circuit.
The Qatar 1812 KM establishes the competitive picture for the season ahead, revealing which manufacturers and teams have prepared most effectively during the off-season. Performance at Losail often indicates trends that develop throughout the championship campaign.
