About Rally Japan

Rally Japan returns as the seventh round of the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship. FORUM8 Rally Japan takes place in the Aichi and Gifu Prefectures, with its base in Nagoya and operations centered around Toyota City. This tarmac rally challenges drivers on some of the most demanding asphalt roads in the WRC calendar.

Event Overview

The 2026 edition of Rally Japan features approximately 20 special stages covering over 300 kilometers of competitive action. The rally operates under the concept "ENJOY! RALLY JAPAN" and focuses on the pure challenge of rallying. The service park and a Super Special Stage are located at Toyota Stadium, while Kuragaike Park hosts the shakedown and opening stage.

The Circuit Characteristics

Rally Japan presents narrow and twisty mountain asphalt stages that rank among the most technical in the WRC. The roads wind through mountainous regions with minimal room for error. Barriers, drop-offs, and dense trees line the stages, creating a rally where precision matters above all else. Drivers face variable conditions including changing grip levels, fog, fallen leaves, and damp patches throughout the stages.

Key Stage Locations

Lake Mikawako stages appear twice in the itinerary, with the second run serving as the Wolf Power Stage. The narrow nature of these roads demands total commitment from drivers while offering no margin for mistakes. The surface remains tarmac throughout, distinguishing this rally from gravel events on the WRC calendar.

Competition Categories and Teams

Rally Japan hosts competition across multiple championships including the World Rally Championship, WRC2 Championship, and WRC3 Championship. Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team, and M-Sport Ford World Rally Team represent the major manufacturer entries. Oliver Solberg joins the top tier for his first full-time campaign in 2026, adding fresh competition to the Rally1 field.

Technical Regulations

The event follows FIA World Rally Championship technical regulations. Pirelli supplies tires for all competitors, with Rally1 teams receiving allocations of hard, soft, and wet compounds. All participants use FIA-approved fuel from the designated supplier. The 2026 season continues with current Rally1 regulations, with new WRC27 rules scheduled for introduction in 2027.

What Makes Rally Japan Unique

Rally Japan takes place in Toyota City, home to Toyota Gazoo Racing. The event has strong support from local fans who fill the stages to capacity. Japan's mountain asphalt creates one of the narrowest and most technical challenges in the entire WRC. The rally organization maintains a commitment to environmental responsibility with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.

The Challenge for Drivers

The difference between commitment and catastrophe measures in millimeters on these Japanese mountain roads. Drivers must read the constantly changing conditions while maintaining maximum speed through the tight corners. The technical nature of the stages often plays a decisive role in championship battles. This wrc event tests driver skill and car setup in equal measure, providing a true examination of rally capability on tarmac surfaces.
