About Rally Saudi Arabia

Rally Saudi Arabia returns to the FIA World Rally Championship calendar in 2026, bringing the WRC back to the Middle East. Based out of Jeddah, this event presents a unique challenge for competitors with its diverse desert and mountain terrain. The rally spans four days and features approximately 17 special stages, covering a competitive distance of around 320 kilometers. The main operational hub and service park will be located at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which may also host a super special stage.

Circuit Details and Stage Characteristics

The rally route combines open desert speed with rocky technical sections. Competitors face a variety of terrains, transitioning from smooth and fast roads to rougher, more abrasive sections. The course incorporates mountainous, volcanic, and diverse desert landscapes. Drivers navigate wide, flowing gravel roads with sweeping turns and blind crests, alongside more technical sections that demand precision and careful tire management.

Surface grip and visibility change constantly due to shifting sands, varied terrain, and different light conditions. The high speeds combined with abrasive surfaces create significant risk of tire damage and suspension wear. Teams must adapt quickly to succeed in these conditions.

Key Stage Types

The Jameel Motorsport Super Special Stage is an asphalt twin-car format, likely positioned near the service park for spectator viewing. Al-Fasallyah begins on a narrow, fast desert road with long straights before moving into faster desert ground with small crests and gentle dune rises. The stage becomes more technical and concludes with a rocky downhill section.

The Moon Stage features ploughed tracks, offering a mix of technical, twisty sections and rough, rocky ground. Khulays utilizes ploughed roads with notable elevation changes, including a steep uphill climb, descents, and tight, technical hairpins. Some stages may be extended versions of those used previously in the Middle East Rally Championship. Approximately 50% of the route has undergone construction work, including the addition of Armco barriers for enhanced safety.

Confirmed Participants for 2026

Hyundai Motorsport has confirmed its participation in Rally Saudi Arabia 2026. Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe, along with Adrien Fourmaux and Alexandre Coria, will compete in all rallies. A third Hyundai car will be shared by Esapekka Lappi, Dani Sordo, and Hayden Paddon. Oliver Solberg is set to embark on his first full-time campaign in the WRC's top tier in 2026. The full entry list will be confirmed closer to the event.

Technical Specifications

The 2026 season represents a transitional period for Rally1 cars. Current generation Rally1 cars will still compete, while new technical regulations will be gradually phased in before the complete rollout of the new formula in 2027.

Rally1 Car Specifications

Rally1 cars feature 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged engines, capped at 330bhp through a restrictor and controlled torque curve. The hybrid units that were part of Rally1 cars were removed starting in 2025. The intake air restrictor diameter was reduced from 36mm to 35mm, consequently reducing maximum output. All Rally1 cars use 100% sustainable fossil-free fuel.

The chassis features a spaceframe design, ensuring a very high level of safety protection for the driver and co-driver. The drivetrain consists of a four-wheel-drive system with mechanical differentials at the front and rear, along with a five-speed mechanical gearbox and short suspension travel.

The FIA has granted two additional homologation jokers for chassis development in 2026, allowing teams to develop their cars further within the final year of the current technical cycle.

Sporting Regulation Updates

New regulations define minimum rest periods. Total rest hours across the rally must be at least equal to the total competition hours, with daily rest periods not falling below ten hours. This includes at least one twelve-hour recovery period. Competitors experiencing engine failure after the start can replace their engine, but Rally1 cars nominated for Manufacturer points will incur a 60-minute time penalty and be ineligible for points at that event.

Event History and Background

Saudi Arabia's journey to the WRC calendar began with a candidate event in 2023. Organizers signed a ten-year contract with WRC Promoter GmbH, officially bringing Rally Saudi Arabia to the World Rally Championship starting in 2025. Rally Saudi Arabia 2026 continues the Kingdom's commitment to hosting world-class rally competition.

Saudi Arabia has rapidly established itself as a motorsport destination, already hosting Formula 1, the Dakar Rally, Formula E, Extreme E, GT World Challenge, and WTCR. Hosting the WRC aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Kingdom into a global hub for sport and adventure tourism.

What Makes Rally Saudi Arabia Unique

The diverse terrain and varied landscapes make Rally Saudi Arabia visually distinctive among WRC events. The lack of extensive previous WRC data for the specific routes in Saudi Arabia presents a unique challenge for crews and engineers. Teams must adapt to varying conditions like shifting sand and unpredictable light without the benefit of historical performance data.

Some sections of the rally may incorporate a "flag system" similar to skiing, guiding drivers through areas without clearly defined roads. This feature is rarely seen in the WRC and adds another layer of challenge for competitors. The combination of high-speed desert sections and technical rocky passages tests every aspect of a rally car's performance and driver skill.

Rally Saudi Arabia offers fans the opportunity to witness world-class rally action in a unique setting. The event brings together top international teams and drivers competing across demanding terrain that few have experienced before in the WRC. The diverse stages and challenging conditions promise compelling competition throughout the event.
