About Donington
Donington Park will host the British round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship in 2026. This historic circuit in Leicestershire, England, serves as a premier venue for WorldSBK racing. The weekend features three main Superbike races alongside competitions in the World Supersport and the new World Sportbike categories. Fans attending Donington can access the Paddock Show and Victory Lane, offering close views of riders and podium ceremonies.
Circuit Details
Donington Park stands as the UK's first permanent park circuit. The venue opened in 1931 near Castle Donington. MotorSport Vision owns and operates the facility, which has a capacity of 120,000 spectators. The Grand Prix layout measures 4.020 km (2.498 mi) and contains 12 turns. The circuit features flowing corners, significant elevation changes, and fast sections that challenge riders.
The track includes several notable sections. Craner Curves tests rider precision through its sweeping bends. The Old Hairpin requires hard braking. The Schwantz sequence demands quick direction changes. Redgate opens the lap with a sharp right-hander. The Fogarty Esses flow through the middle sector. Melbourne Hairpin and Goddards complete the lap with technical corners.
Race Format
The Donington WSBK weekend follows a structured format across three days. Practice sessions and qualifying take place on Friday and Saturday. The Superpole session on Saturday determines the starting grid for Race 1, which occurs later that day. Sunday morning brings the Superpole Race, a shorter sprint event that sets the grid for Race 2 on Sunday afternoon. This format provides multiple opportunities to see WorldSBK action at Donington Park.
Expected Participants for 2026
The 2026 WorldSBK season features a changed grid with several new riders. Miguel Oliveira and Somkiat Chantra move from MotoGP to compete in the championship. Nicolò Bulega leads the Ducati team after finishing as runner-up in the previous season. British fans can watch home riders Alex Lowes and Sam Lowes compete at Donington. Jake Dixon returns to the circuit for the first time since 2018. Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Locatelli are also expected to race. The championship typically includes 14 teams.
Technical Regulations
WorldSBK uses modified production motorcycles. Manufacturers must produce 2,000 units of a model for homologation. Each rider in the Superbike class uses a maximum of seven engines per season. Pirelli supplies all tires, with 24 tires allocated per rider for each race weekend. The maximum fuel tank capacity is 21 litres. The minimum bike weight is 168kg, with a rider weight reference of 80kg. Riders below this reference weight must add 50% of the difference to their machine.
World Sportbike Category
The new World Sportbike class debuts in 2026 with specific regulations. Riders must be at least 16 years old. New contracted riders can be up to 25 years old, while experienced riders from WorldSSP300 or the Women's Circuit Racing World Championship can compete until age 28. Both WorldSSP and WorldSPB have a maximum grid size of 34 participants, including one wildcard entry. Eligible bikes produce approximately 90hp and include the Yamaha R7, Aprilia RS 660, Honda CBR600RR, Kove 450RR, Suzuki GSX-8R, Triumph Daytona 660, Kawasaki ZX-6R 636, and CFMoto 675 SR-R.
Historical Significance
Donington Park holds a special place in WorldSBK history. The circuit hosted the first World Superbike round on April 3, 1988. Davide Tardozzi and Marco Lucchinelli won those inaugural races. The venue has hosted more WorldSBK races than any other circuit except Phillip Island and Assen. Carl Fogarty scored his first WorldSBK race win at Donington in 1992, marking an important moment for the British rider. Ducati has achieved the most podium finishes at this circuit.
Beyond Motorcycle Racing
Donington Park serves multiple purposes beyond WSBK. The venue hosts the annual Download Festival, a major rock music event. The circuit held the 1993 European Formula 1 Grand Prix, where Ayrton Senna delivered a memorable wet-weather performance, moving from fifth to first on the opening lap. In 1992, Donington Park hosted "One Step Beyond," billed as the largest outdoor all-night rave in Britain. The circuit's location near East Midlands Airport makes it accessible for international visitors.
What to Expect in 2026
The 2026 Donington WSBK event promises close racing across multiple classes. The circuit's technical layout rewards skilled riders who can master the elevation changes and flowing corners. British riders competing on home soil add local interest to the weekend. The new WorldSPB category introduces another dimension to the race program. Three days of track action provide extensive racing for fans attending Donington Park or following the championship.
