KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is a technology used in racing cars that captures energy normally lost during braking and stores it to give the driver a temporary power boost for acceleration.

When a race car brakes, it creates a huge amount of energy that usually just turns into heat and disappears into the air. KERS is clever because it catches some of that energy before it's wasted. Think of it like a rechargeable battery that fills up every time the driver hits the brakes, then gives back that stored power when the driver needs extra speed.

In Formula One, where KERS became famous, drivers could press a button on their steering wheel to activate the system. This would give them roughly 80 extra horsepower for about six or seven seconds per lap. That might not sound like much time, but in racing, even a fraction of a second can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Drivers used their KERS boost strategically throughout a race. The most common use was for overtaking - that extra burst of speed could help a driver pull alongside a competitor and pass them on a straight section of track. It was also useful for defending position, helping drivers stay ahead of rivals trying to overtake them. Some drivers saved their boost for accelerating out of slow corners or for the start of the race.

There are two main types of kinetic energy recovery systems. The electronic version, which was more popular in Formula One, uses an electric motor to convert the braking energy into electricity. This electricity gets stored in batteries, similar to how a hybrid road car works. The mechanical version uses a spinning flywheel - imagine a heavy disc spinning incredibly fast - to store the energy physically rather than electrically.

KERS first appeared in Formula One during the 2009 season. Teams like McLaren, Ferrari, and Renault equipped their cars with the system, though not all teams chose to use it initially due to the cost and complexity. Lewis Hamilton won the first-ever Formula One race with a hybrid engine at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix using KERS.

The system was dropped for the 2010 season because it was expensive and teams had concerns about safety, particularly since mechanics had to work on high-voltage systems. However, KERS returned in 2011 and eventually evolved into the more advanced Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) that became mandatory in Formula One from 2014 onward.

Beyond Formula One, kinetic energy recovery technology has been used in endurance racing, including the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. Manufacturers like Audi, Porsche, and Toyota developed their own versions of the technology for their prototype race cars, proving that energy recovery systems could work in different types of motorsport.
