Manual Override Boost
Manual Override Boost is a system in motorsport that allows a driver to manually activate an extra surge of power, usually from an electric motor, to temporarily increase their car's speed and performance during a race.
Think of it like a video game power-up button that drivers can press when they need an extra kick of speed. In modern racing cars that use hybrid technology (combining traditional engines with electric motors), drivers have a limited amount of electrical energy stored in batteries. Manual Override Boost lets them release this stored energy on demand to gain a competitive advantage.
The most significant example of this technology is Formula 1's new Manual Override Mode, often called MOM or Overtake Mode, which will debut in the 2026 season. This system is designed to help drivers pass the car in front of them more easily. When a driver gets within one second of the car ahead, they can activate this boost to deploy maximum electrical power from their car's electric motor system.
What makes Manual Override Mode special is how it levels the playing field between two competing cars. When the chasing driver activates the boost, they get access to an extra 350 kilowatts of electrical power. At the same time, the car in front is restricted from using the same amount of power. This creates a performance gap that makes overtaking possible but still requires skill to execute successfully.
Unlike the previous DRS (Drag Reduction System) that Formula 1 used, which only worked in specific zones marked on the track, Manual Override Boost can be used anywhere on the circuit. This gives drivers much more strategic freedom. They can choose to deploy their boost when exiting a corner onto a straight, or save it for a different part of the track where they think it will be most effective.
The catch is that drivers have a limited amount of electrical energy to use throughout the race. This means they must think carefully about when to use their boost. Using it too early or too often might leave them defenseless later in the race when they need it most. This adds an interesting layer of strategy and energy management to racing.
Other racing series use similar concepts under different names. IndyCar, for example, has a "Push-to-Pass" system that works on the same basic principle: drivers press a button to get temporary extra power for overtaking or defending their position.
