Tyre Blanket

A tyre blanket is an electrically heated cover that wraps around racing tyres to warm them up to their ideal working temperature before a vehicle goes out on the track.

Racing tyres are specially designed to work best when they're hot. Unlike the tyres on your road car, racing tyres need to reach temperatures between 70-100°C (158-212°F) to provide maximum grip. When they're cold, the rubber is hard and stiff, which means the tyres can't grip the track surface properly. This makes the car difficult to control and much slower.

Tyre blankets solve this problem by heating the tyres while the car is still in the pit garage or paddock. They look like large electric blankets that wrap completely around each tyre, with heating elements inside that warm the rubber evenly. Teams plug them into a control box that monitors and maintains the exact temperature needed.

The safety benefits of tyre blankets are significant. Driving on cold racing tyres is extremely dangerous because the lack of grip makes the car unpredictable and prone to sliding. By pre-heating the tyres, drivers have immediate control and confidence from the moment they leave the pit lane, rather than having to spend several laps carefully building up temperature.

Tyre blankets also help preserve the tyres themselves. Pushing hard on cold tyres can damage the rubber surface through a process called "graining," where the tyre slides and tears rather than grips. This reduces performance and shortens the tyre's lifespan. Pre-heating prevents this damage and ensures the tyres perform at their best for longer.

Formula 1 is perhaps the most well-known series that uses tyre blankets. F1 regulations specify exactly how hot teams can heat their tyres and for how long. Slick tyres (smooth tyres used in dry conditions) can be heated to a maximum of 70°C for up to two hours before being fitted to the car. Different rules apply to wet weather tyres.

Other racing series like MotoGP (motorcycle racing) and various single-seater championships also rely heavily on tyre blankets. Some endurance racing categories use tyre "ovens" or "tents" instead, which blow hot air around the tyres rather than wrapping them individually. This approach works better for certain types of race cars where the wheel design makes blankets difficult to fit.

The technology behind modern tyre blankets is surprisingly sophisticated. They contain sensors that can monitor tyre pressure as they heat up, and the heating elements are designed to warm the tyre evenly across its entire surface. This precision is crucial because uneven heating could create performance problems or even damage the tyre.

There's ongoing debate in motorsport about whether tyre blankets should be banned to reduce costs and improve environmental sustainability. However, any such ban would require tyre manufacturers to develop new compounds that can reach working temperature quickly through driving alone, which remains a significant technical challenge.
