About Formula 3
The first major step toward Formula 1, Formula 3 represents the foundation of elite motorsport development. This thrilling championship nurtures raw talent and introduces young drivers to the pressures and demands of international racing.
What is Formula 3?
Formula 3 is a single-make championship where thirty of motorsport's brightest prospects compete in identical cars. Racing at Formula 1 events, these ambitious drivers take their first steps on the global stage, learning crucial skills as they battle wheel-to-wheel in front of the motorsport world.
Technical Excellence
Every Formula 3 car is equipped with a powerful 3.4-liter V6 naturally-aspirated engine producing 380 horsepower. These sophisticated racing machines feature advanced safety systems, including the halo cockpit protection device, and aerodynamic designs that teach drivers the fundamentals of high-downforce racing. Operating with sustainable fuels and advanced technology, Formula 3 prepares drivers for the technical challenges that lie ahead in Formula 2 and Formula 1.
Racing Format
Formula 3 weekends deliver intense racing across three days of competition. Fridays see drivers master their cars through practice and qualifying sessions. Saturday features the Sprint Race, where a reversed grid for the top twelve qualifiers creates opportunities for spectacular overtaking. Sunday's Feature Race showcases pure racing talent as drivers battle for crucial championship points before the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Path to Success
Formula 3's effectiveness in developing talent is demonstrated by its graduates, including Formula 1 stars like Oscar Piastri. The championship serves as the crucial first test of a driver's potential, teaching them the fundamentals of professional racing while competing against equally talented rivals. Success in Formula 3 opens the door to Formula 2 and puts drivers firmly on the path to Formula 1.
Championship Structure
The championship visits ten prestigious circuits throughout the season, all supporting Formula 1 events. From the high-speed straights of Monza to the historic streets of Monaco, drivers must master a variety of challenging tracks. This diverse calendar ensures drivers develop the complete skill set needed to progress in their motorsport careers, while racing in front of Formula 1 teams and decision-makers.
