About GT Challenge
The Intercontinental GT Challenge represents the pinnacle of global GT3 endurance racing, bringing together five of the world's most demanding endurance events across four continents. Organized by SRO Motorsports Group as part of the GT World Challenge powered by AWS platform, the IGTC showcases FIA GT3-specification cars in competition at legendary circuits. The 2026 calendar includes the Meguiar's Bathurst 12 Hour in Australia, the ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring in Germany, the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium, the Suzuka 1000km in Japan, and the Indianapolis 8 Hour in the United States. This series attracts factory teams and professional drivers from leading manufacturers including Aston Martin, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG, McLaren, Audi, and Porsche.
Championship Structure
The Intercontinental GT Challenge awards a Manufacturers' crown based on results from these five endurance races spanning the global motorsport calendar. The championship runs from February through October, beginning with the Bathurst 12 Hour in Australia's summer and concluding with the Indianapolis 8 Hour in the American autumn. Each round presents distinct challenges, from Bathurst's Mount Panorama layout to the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, the high-speed demands of Spa-Francorchamps, Suzuka's technical sections, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway's combination of oval banking and infield road course.
Points are awarded based on finishing positions, with the top-scoring cars per manufacturer contributing to the championship standings. The series utilizes a Balance of Performance framework to equalize competition among different GT3 models, adjusting factors such as engine power, weight, and aerodynamics to promote close racing across multiple brands.
Race Format and Duration
Unlike sprint racing, the Intercontinental GT Challenge focuses exclusively on endurance competition. Race durations vary from the 1000-kilometer distance at Suzuka to the eight-hour format at Indianapolis, the 12-hour challenge at Bathurst, and the ultimate 24-hour tests at both the Nürburgring and Spa. These extended formats require teams to manage driver changes, fuel strategy, tire management, and mechanical reliability while maintaining competitive pace.
Each event follows a multi-day format with practice sessions, qualifying, and the main race. The qualifying format and procedures vary by event, but all rounds culminate in a single endurance race that determines the outcome. Night racing features at several venues, adding another layer of complexity to driver performance and team strategy.
Technical Regulations
The series utilizes FIA GT3-specification cars, which are production-based sports cars modified for racing. These regulations ensure accessibility for both factory-backed teams and customer racing programs while maintaining high performance standards. The Balance of Performance system adjusts technical parameters throughout the season to maintain competitive parity among different manufacturers and models competing in the championship.
Why Fans Follow the IGTC
The Intercontinental GT Challenge appeals to motorsport fans through its combination of iconic venues, extended race durations, and multi-manufacturer competition. Each round represents a significant event in its own right, with races like the Spa 24 Hours and Nürburgring 24 Hours drawing large crowds and extensive international coverage. The endurance format creates unpredictable racing where strategy, consistency, and reliability matter as much as outright speed. The global calendar allows fans across different continents to experience world-class GT racing, while the GT3 platform features recognizable sports cars from prestigious automotive brands.
