About Moto2
Introduced in 2010 as a replacement for the historic 250cc class, Moto2 serves as the intermediate category in the FIM Road Racing World Championship. The class represents a crucial stepping stone between Moto3 and MotoGP, where aspiring riders develop the skills and experience needed to compete at the highest level of motorcycle racing. The 2026 season marks the 78th edition of the world championship and will be the longest in Moto2 history with 22 events spanning multiple continents.
Technical Specifications
Moto2 operates on a one-make engine philosophy, with all competitors using 765cc triple-cylinder engines developed by Triumph. Introduced in 2019, these powerplants produce distinctive sound and high torque while emphasizing pure rider skill through the absence of electronic rider aids like traction control. This approach places greater emphasis on tire management and braking precision. Teams have freedom to select their chassis from specialized constructors including Kalex, Boscoscuro, and others, creating technical competition between manufacturers. The minimum combined weight for bike and rider is set at 217kg. Riders are allocated seven engines for the entire season and must complete each race weekend with eight front tires and nine rear tires.
Championship Format
The Moto2 World Championship is determined by points accumulated across Grand Prix races throughout the season. Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers on a scale of 25, 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. Each race covers approximately one hundred kilometers, and the rider with the highest total points at season's end is crowned champion. Unlike MotoGP, Moto2 does not feature sprint races, with the championship decided purely through full-length Grand Prix events.
Weekend Structure
A Moto2 Grand Prix weekend features two 40-minute free practice sessions. Since 2024, the Friday session has been designated as Free Practice with no timed qualifying, allowing teams additional time for machine setup. The qualifying format divides riders based on combined practice times: those ranked fourteenth or higher advance directly to the fifteen-minute Qualifying Session 2, while remaining riders compete in Qualifying Session 1. The four fastest from Q1 progress to Q2, which determines the top eighteen grid positions. To qualify, riders must set a time within 110% of the fastest lap. The warm-up session was abolished with recent format changes.
The 2026 Season
The 2026 grid features a mix of established talents and promising rookies graduating from Moto3. Notable teams include Red Bull KTM Ajo, ELF Marc VDS Racing Team, Aspar Team, and Italjet Gresini Moto2. Potential championship contenders include Manuel González, David Alonso, Daniel Holgado, Izan Guevara, and Celestino Vietti. The provisional calendar includes classic circuits such as Mugello in Italy, Brno in Czechia, and Assen in the Netherlands, alongside newer venues like the returning Brazilian Grand Prix at Goiânia. A new regulation for 2026 restricts wild card entries to chassis from manufacturers under concession rules, opening opportunities for smaller manufacturers.
Why Fans Follow Moto2
The standardized engine specification creates exceptionally close racing where rider skill and team strategy determine results rather than engine performance differences. This competitive balance allows smaller teams to challenge larger operations, producing unpredictable and exciting races. Many successful MotoGP riders, including Marc Márquez, Francesco Bagnaia, and Pol Espargaró, developed their talents in Moto2, making the class essential viewing for fans tracking future premier class stars. The combination of close competition, emerging talent, and technical chassis development makes Moto2 one of the most competitive categories in motorcycle racing.
