About WRC

Established in 1973, the World Rally Championship (WRC) represents the pinnacle of international rally competition. The championship tests driver skill and manufacturer engineering across diverse terrains and weather conditions, from snow-covered forests to desert dunes and winding mountain passes. Unlike circuit-based motorsport, WRC crews race against the clock on closed public roads, with co-drivers reading pace notes to guide drivers through each stage.

Competition Format

WRC rallies feature special stages—timed sections on closed roads where competitors drive one at a time, aiming for the fastest possible time. Between stages, crews drive on public roads adhering to normal traffic regulations. Events typically span four competitive days, with some rallies including up to 23 special stages. The crew with the shortest cumulative time across all stages wins the rally. Competitors face varied surfaces including gravel, tarmac, snow, and ice, each demanding different driving techniques and car setups.

Weekend Structure

A rally weekend begins with two days of reconnaissance, where crews drive the route at limited speed to create detailed pace notes. Thursday morning features a shakedown session for final car setup adjustments at competitive speed. Competition usually starts Thursday evening with a short spectator-friendly stage, often in town centers or stadiums. The following three days feature multiple special stages, with crews visiting the service park at predetermined intervals—typically three times daily for 15, 40, and 45-minute sessions where teams perform mechanical work. The rally concludes Sunday lunchtime with the Power Stage, which offers bonus championship points.

2026 Season Context

The 2026 season marks the fifth and final year for the current Rally1 technical regulations before a significant overhaul in 2027. The calendar comprises 14 rounds across five continents, confirmed in July 2025. The season opens with Rallye Monte-Carlo in January and concludes with Rally Saudi Arabia in November. Notable calendar features include four asphalt rounds, nine gravel events, and one snow and ice rally. Croatia Rally returns after a season away, while Rally Islas Canarias joins the global calendar. Rally Japan moves from November to May, and the schedule includes a South American double-header featuring Paraguay and Chile.

Championship Structure

The WRC awards multiple titles: Drivers', Co-Drivers', and Manufacturers' Championships for Rally1 competitors, alongside support championships including WRC2, WRC2 Challenger, WRC3 Open, Junior WRC, and the Masters Cup. Points are awarded to the top ten finishers (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1), with bonus points available through two systems: Super Sunday awards points for the fastest combined times across all Sunday stages, while the Power Stage rewards the five quickest crews on the final stage (5-4-3-2-1 points for both). For manufacturers, only the top two classified cars from each team score points.

Technical Regulations

Rally1 cars feature 1.6-liter turbocharged engines with all-wheel drive, producing 330bhp. Hybrid units were removed from 2025 onwards and remain absent in 2026. Teams use a maximum of two engines per season, with in-event changes incurring significant penalties. For 2026, manufacturers receive two additional homologation jokers for chassis development. The 2027 regulations will prioritize affordability and sustainability, focusing initially on sustainably-fueled internal combustion engines.

Notable Teams

Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT enters as reigning Manufacturers' Champions, fielding Elfyn Evans full-time and Sébastien Ogier for 10 rallies. Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT campaigns Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux as full-time entries, with a third car shared among several drivers. M-Sport Ford World Rally Team fields Josh McErlean and Jon Armstrong in full-time campaigns. The series continues to attract both factory-backed operations and privateer entries across its multi-tiered championship structure.
