About Alghero
Alghero, situated on the island of Sardinia in Italy, operates as a major motorsport center hosting multiple racing venues and events. The city does not feature a single unified racing circuit but instead offers diverse motorsport facilities including a challenging hillclimb course, two professional motocross tracks, a karting venue, and serves as the headquarters for the FIA World Rally Championship's Sardinian round. Each facility provides distinct racing experiences across different motorsport disciplines, making Alghero a comprehensive destination for racing enthusiasts and competitors.
Alghero - Scala Piccada Hillclimb
The Scala Piccada hillclimb represents one of Italy's premier mountain racing venues, competing regularly in the Italian mountain race cup. This challenging course stretches 5.1 kilometers up mountain terrain with a narrow road width of just 6 meters. The track features natural elements including trees, bushes, rocks, and soil alongside constructed safety features such as guardrails, walls, and protective curbs. Developers created digital versions of this track using Blender software, working from precise altimetric and cartographic GIS data. The simulation project began in 2020, with active development occurring in 2022 over approximately four to five months of concentrated work.
Lazzaretto Motocross Circuit
The Lazzaretto track provides a technical 1,625-meter course located near Bombarde beach, offering riders spectacular sea views during competition. The circuit features compact soil construction with continuous elevation changes, natural and artificial jumps, tight turns, and fast straights. This venue hosted the 2026 Internazionali d'Italia EICMA Series, an international off-road competition that serves as important preparation for the Motocross World Championship. The facility includes showers, toilets, paddock electricity, and dedicated spectator areas. Races occur across three categories: 125cc, MX2, and MX1 classes.
Motocross Track MX Fertilia
MX Fertilia offers a different riding experience with its 1,300-meter mixed sand and dirt surface. The track incorporates 21 jumps at varying heights, providing comprehensive training opportunities on diverse terrain types. Riders navigate tight turns and long straights throughout the course. Support facilities include an equipped paddock, parking areas, and refreshment services. Both motocross venues operate year-round, accommodating riders at all skill levels.
Rally Italia Sardegna
Alghero functions as the operational headquarters for Rally Italia Sardegna, a premier gravel event in the FIA World Rally Championship. The rally moved to Sardinia in 2004, with Alghero first hosting WRC operations in 2014. The city has welcomed the championship ten times since. Rally stages utilize abrasive gravel roads characterized by punishing rocks, deep ruts, and harsh tire wear across varied landscapes including hills, forests, and coastal areas. The service park occupies Lungomare Barcellona, positioned directly beside the Mediterranean Sea. The ceremonial finish occurs beneath the city's ancient bastions, creating a distinctive podium setting. The event has produced extremely close results, including Thierry Neuville's 0.7-second victory in 2018 and Ott Tänak's 0.2-second margin in 2024. The 2026 edition, scheduled for October 1-4, will serve as the penultimate WRC round and final European event of the season.
Pista del Corallo Karting Track
The karting facility near Alghero provides entry-level racing opportunities with a compact configuration. The track features four primary corners with lap times typically ranging from 51 to 52 seconds. This circuit serves local karting enthusiasts and introduces newcomers to competitive motorsport.
