Automotodrom Grobnik stands as Croatia's premier motorsport facility and the country's only FIA- and FIM-accredited racing circuit. The track sits in the mountains approximately 10 kilometers north of Rijeka, within the scenic Kvarner region. This unique location offers stunning views over the Adriatic Sea and Kvarner Bay, making it one of Europe's most visually striking racing venues. The circuit serves both automobile and motorcycle racing, hosting national championships and international series throughout the year.

Track Layout and Design

The circuit follows an anti-clockwise direction and measures 4.168 kilometers in length. Drivers and riders navigate 18 turns that blend extended straights with sweeping corners. The track demands precise line-taking and momentum preservation due to its flowing nature. Elevation changes of approximately 40 meters across the circuit add significant challenge. The undulating terrain creates a rhythmic progression that tests driver skill and vehicle setup. The layout emphasizes high-speed acceleration zones combined with technical corner sequences that reward consistency and precision.

Technical Specifications and Standards

The track maintains an average width of 10.6 meters, expanding to 15 meters on the starting straight. This width allows competitive overtaking opportunities while meeting international safety requirements. Automotodrom Grobnik holds FIA Grade 4 certification, which permits hosting of national championships and international series including Formula 3 and GT3 categories. The circuit also maintains FIM accreditation for motorcycle events. The asphalt surface, originally laid by the Yugoslav army, provides excellent grip in both dry and damp conditions. A major resurfacing project completed in 2018 improved the track surface and replaced kerbs and guardrails. This project also widened and straightened several zones, enhancing safety and racing quality.

Racing History and Heritage

Construction of Automotodrom Grobnik took just two months during spring and summer 1978. The Yugoslav army and prisoners assisted the local motor club in this rapid construction effort. The circuit replaced the dangerous Opatija street circuit and opened officially on September 17, 1978. The venue made its international debut immediately by hosting the 1978 Yugoslavian Motorcycle Grand Prix. From 1978 to 1990, the circuit hosted 13 consecutive editions of the Yugoslavian round of the MotoGP World Championship. Legendary riders including Freddie Spencer, Wayne Gardner, Eddie Lawson, Kenny Roberts, Randy Mamola, Kevin Schwantz, and Wayne Rainey competed at Grobnik during this golden era. The Yugoslav Wars interrupted racing activities during the 1990s, but the circuit resumed operations after the conflict ended.

Notable Events and Championships

Automotodrom Grobnik has hosted numerous prestigious racing series beyond the Yugoslavian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The FIM Sidecar World Championship has visited the circuit sporadically from 1980 through 2026. TCR Eastern Europe held rounds at Grobnik from 2019 to 2022 and returns in 2026. Other significant events include the Austria Formula Cup, Alpe Adria International Motorcycle Championship (2011 to present), European Formula 3 Championship, World Superbike Championship, European Touring Car Championship, Italian GT, and Interserie. The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series competed at the circuit from 2020 to 2022. In 2025, Ferrari Challenge Europe is scheduled to race at Grobnik.

Facilities and Accessibility

The circuit offers easy access from the A6 motorway. A modern pit complex provides 22 to 28 pit boxes for competing teams. Grandstands offer excellent viewing positions, particularly around turns 1 and 15 where overtaking frequently occurs. The facility includes dedicated medical facilities with emergency response teams, professional timing systems, and ample paddock space. Restaurant services, technical support areas, and training rooms for driving schools serve visitors and participants. An adjacent airfield accommodates private flights. The circuit operates daily for training, testing, and special events including "Grobnik Open Days" for racing enthusiasts.
