About Charlotte Motor Speedway

Charlotte Motor Speedway stands as one of America's premier racing facilities, located in Concord, North Carolina, approximately 13 miles from Charlotte. This iconic motorsports complex has been thrilling racing fans since 1960 and has earned its reputation as "America's Home for Racing" through decades of motorsport excellence and innovation.

Historical Development

Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner designed and built Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1959, with the facility opening on June 19, 1960. The inaugural event was the first 600-mile NASCAR race, now known as the Coca-Cola 600, won by Joe Lee Johnson. Smith briefly left the Speedway in 1962 but returned to gain majority ownership in 1975. The facility operated under the name Lowe's Motor Speedway from 1999 to 2009 due to a sponsorship agreement. Today, Speedway Motorsports, LLC owns and operates the track, continuing its legacy of racing excellence.

Track Configuration and Specifications

The main track features a 1.5-mile (2.414 km) quad-oval speedway with 24-degree banking in the turns and 5-degree banking on the straightaways. The frontstretch extends 1,980 feet, while the backstretch measures 1,500 feet. Turns 1 and 2 span 2,400 feet with a 685-foot radius, and turns 3 and 4 cover 2,040 feet with a 625-foot radius. In 2018, the track introduced the "Roval" (Road Course-Oval hybrid), a 2.28-mile circuit combining the oval with an infield road course featuring 17 challenging turns. Recent modifications in 2024 reconfigured turns 6 and 16, expanding the track length to 2.32 miles.

Additional Racing Surfaces

The 2,000-acre complex includes several other racing surfaces: - A 0.25-mile flat oval for smaller events - "The Dirt Track," a 0.4-mile clay oval hosting dirt racing competitions - A 0.6-mile karting layout for karting events - A 0.2-mile oval located outside Turn 3 - zMAX Dragway, a four-lane drag strip for NHRA events

Major Racing Events

Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts several significant NASCAR events annually: - The Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR's longest race at 600 miles, held since 1960 - Bank of America ROVAL 400, conducted on the road course-oval hybrid since 2018 - NASCAR All-Star Race (hosted multiple times throughout its history) - NASCAR Xfinity Series races including the BetMGM 300 and Drive for the Cure 250 - NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events such as the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 The track also hosts World of Outlaws sprint car and late model competitions, NHRA drag racing events, and biannual AutoFair festivals.

Unique Features

Charlotte Motor Speedway set a Guinness World Record in 2011 for installing the world's largest HDTV at a sports venue. The massive LED display enhances fan viewing experiences. The facility emphasizes a "Fan First" philosophy, with continuous improvements to grandstands, lighting systems, and garage areas to improve spectator enjoyment.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Located in the heart of NASCAR country, the speedway generates approximately $450 million in regional economic impact annually. Most NASCAR teams maintain headquarters near the track, creating a racing industry hub. The speedway's historical significance extends beyond racing—President George Washington once ate lunch at a house that later served as the speedway's offices. With a seating capacity of approximately 95,000, Charlotte Motor Speedway continues to blend racing tradition with modern innovation, solidifying its place as one of motorsport's most important venues.
