About Circuit international de Sakhir

The Bahrain International Circuit stands as a landmark motorsport facility in Sakhir, Bahrain. This circuit opened in 2004 and achieved a historic milestone as the first Formula 1 venue in the Middle East. German architect Hermann Tilke designed the circuit, which took just 16 to 18 months to complete at a cost of $150 million. The facility sits in the Sakhir desert and can accommodate 70,000 spectators. Since its opening, the circuit has established itself as one of the most versatile racing venues globally, featuring six separate tracks and five FIA Grade 1 certified layouts.

Track Configurations

The circuit offers multiple layouts for different racing series. The Grand Prix Circuit measures 5.412 km with 15 turns and serves as the primary layout for Formula 1 events. This configuration includes a 1.12 km start/finish straight and combines long straights with tight corners. The track surface uses graywacke aggregate imported from England, which provides excellent grip but causes significant tire wear.

The Endurance Circuit extends to 6.299 km with 24 turns. Formula 1 used this layout once in 2010 to celebrate the sport's 60th anniversary. The Outer Circuit became famous in 2020 during the Sakhir Grand Prix. This 3.543 km layout with 11 turns produces extremely fast lap times, with Formula 1 cars completing laps in under 60 seconds. Additional configurations include the Paddock Circuit at 3.823 km, the Oasis Inner Track at 2.554 km, and a dedicated 1.2 km drag strip.

Major Racing Events

Michael Schumacher won the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix on April 4, 2004. This race marked the first Formula 1 Grand Prix held in the Middle East. The event has remained a consistent fixture on the F1 calendar. In 2014, the race celebrated its 10th anniversary by switching to a night race format under floodlights. This night racing format continues today and creates a distinctive visual experience.

The 2020 season brought unique circumstances as the circuit hosted two separate Formula 1 races. The traditional Bahrain Grand Prix used the standard Grand Prix layout, while the Sakhir Grand Prix utilized the shorter Outer Circuit. The venue also hosts the 8 Hours of Bahrain, a key round in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Other series that have competed here include FIA Formula 2, FIA Formula 3, Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East, and the Gulf 12 Hours.

Circuit Features and Innovation

The first corner bears the name Michael Schumacher Corner, renamed in 2014 to honor the seven-time champion. The desert location presents unique challenges, particularly sand that blows onto the track. Circuit operators spray adhesive on surrounding sand to prevent this issue. Extensive floodlighting installed in 2014 enables night racing and creates dramatic lighting effects.

In 2007, the circuit became the first Grand Prix venue to receive the FIA Institute Centre of Excellence award. This recognition acknowledged the facility's superior safety standards, medical facilities, and race marshal training. The circuit features large run-off areas that enhance driver safety. During podium celebrations, winners spray Waard, a non-alcoholic rosewater drink, instead of champagne. The 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix attracted a record 36,000 fans in a single day, including 10,000 international visitors. Beyond motorsport, the facility hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events throughout the year.
