About Knockhill

Knockhill Racing Circuit serves as Scotland's national motorsport center. The circuit sits in Fife, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Dunfermline. Drivers can reach Knockhill from Edinburgh in about 45 minutes by car. The circuit opened in September 1974 and has become a key venue for British motorsport competitions. Knockhill holds an FIA grade 3 license, making it the only circuit in Scotland with this certification.

Historical Development

The circuit was built on a unique foundation. Developers joined service roads to a disused mineral railway that once served Lethans Colliery. The first car race took place on May 18, 1975. Derek Butcher purchased the circuit in 1984 and expanded its facilities to host major British championships. The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) first visited Knockhill in 1992. The circuit hosted BTCC races for twelve years until 2002, then resumed hosting in 2004. The British Superbike Championship (BSB) has featured Knockhill on its calendar since 1996.

Track Layouts and Specifications

Knockhill offers three distinct track configurations. The International Layout measures 1.300 miles (2.092 km) and contains 9 corners. The National Layout spans 1.000 mile (1.609 km) and features 10 corners. The Tri-Oval layout runs 0.300 miles (0.483 km) with 3 corners. All layouts maintain a consistent width of 10 meters (33 feet). The circuit features a total elevation change of 37 meters (121 feet), though some measurements suggest up to 200 feet (60 meters). Knockhill stands as the only circuit in the UK licensed to run races in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions.

Notable Corners and Features

The circuit challenges drivers with several distinctive corners. Duffus Dip presents a fast, blind-apex downhill right-hand turn. Many consider it one of the most challenging corners in the UK. Leslie's Bend honors racing driver David Leslie with a quick left-hand corner. McIntyre's, also called Scotsman, creates a difficult braking zone with a ninety-degree right-hand bend. Butcher's follows as a shallow right-hand corner after a short straight from McIntyre's. Taylor's Hairpin completes the circuit as the final corner. The start and finish lines occupy different positions on the track.

Racing Events and Championships

Knockhill hosts multiple prestigious motorsport events. The British Touring Car Championship remains a highlight of the annual calendar. The British Superbike Championship draws large crowds each year. The Scottish Motor Racing Club and Knockhill Motor Sports Club organize regular race meetings. Super Lap Scotland also uses the circuit for time attack competitions.

Lap Records

Jason Plato set the BTCC lap record in 2015. He completed the circuit in 51.521 seconds while driving a VW Passat. Shane Byrne established the BSB record in 2015 with a time of 48.252 seconds on a Kawasaki. Heather Calder holds both directional records on the International Circuit. She set the clockwise record at 41.880 seconds in 2018 driving a Gould GR55. Her anti-clockwise record stands at 42.940 seconds, also achieved in 2018 with the same vehicle.

Additional Facilities

Knockhill provides extensive facilities beyond the main circuit. The venue includes a concrete rally stage for rally car testing and events. A 500-meter karting circuit offers opportunities for kart racing. The facility features a skid pan for driver training, an off-road course, and a rallycross course. On-site parking accommodates 3,000 cars. Pit garages provide space for race teams. The circuit offers on-site fueling services. Visitors can access cafes, including Kinnaird's Bistro, for refreshments.
