About Mandalika International Street Circuit

The Mandalika International Street Circuit stands as Indonesia's premier racing venue, bringing world-class motorsport back to the country after a long absence. Located on the picturesque island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province, this modern circuit combines technical racing challenges with stunning coastal views, making it one of Asia's most distinctive racing destinations.

Location and Development

Situated in the Mandalika resort area, the circuit forms part of a larger tourism development project by the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). The facility opened on November 12, 2021, after years of planning and construction. The circuit adopts a unique concept as a purpose-built track that incorporates public roads, which remain open for regular traffic when not used for racing events. This dual-purpose design maximizes the infrastructure's value while serving both racing and tourism needs.

Track Specifications

The Mandalika circuit stretches 4.313 kilometers (2.680 miles) and features 17 turnsβ€”11 right-handers and 6 left-handers. The track holds FIA Grade 2 certification and can accommodate up to 195,700 spectators, with 50,000 seats in the main grandstand. The racing surface uses Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), specifically selected for high grip in Indonesia's tropical climate. This specialized surface helps race cars and motorcycles maintain traction even in challenging weather conditions.

Technical Facilities

The circuit boasts a 350-meter pit building with up to 50 garages across multiple floors. This structure serves multiple functions, converting into a conference center during non-racing periods. Safety remains a top priority with a fully-equipped medical center located just 100 meters from race control, supported by three helipads for emergency evacuations. The drainage system handles heavy tropical rainfall while supporting vehicles traveling at speeds exceeding 300 km/h.

Racing History

Mandalika marks Indonesia's return to international motorsport after a 25-year absence. The circuit hosted its first major event, the World Superbike Championship, in November 2021. The MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix followed in March 2022, becoming the 65th circuit in history to host a MotoGP round. Current race events include the Asia Talent Cup and Asia Road Racing Championship, with GT World Challenge Asia and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia scheduled for 2025.

Circuit Characteristics

Riders and drivers face a track that blends fast straights with technical corners and natural elevation changes. The circuit divides into three distinct sectors: Sector 1 features a fast straight leading into technical corners; Sector 2 offers medium-speed turns and flowing curves; and Sector 3 contains tight corners that lead back to the main straight. The current MotoGP lap record stands at 1:30.539, set by Enea Bastianini on a Ducati in 2024.

Economic Impact

Beyond motorsport, the Mandalika circuit plays a key role in regional development. The project creates jobs, increases local investment, and boosts tourism in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone. The surrounding area continues to develop with hotels and entertainment facilities across 120 hectares, transforming Lombok into an international sports tourism destination. The Mandalika International Street Circuit represents Indonesia's commitment to world-class sporting infrastructure while showcasing the natural beauty of Lombok to a global audience.
