About Naivasha

Naivasha, Kenya, stands as a major motorsport destination in East Africa. The region hosts two distinct racing venues: the challenging WRC Safari Rally stages and the Whistling Morans karting circuit. These facilities serve different motorsport disciplines, from international rally competition to grassroots karting development. The diverse terrain of the Great Rift Valley provides a unique setting for both professional and amateur racers.

WRC Safari Rally Naivasha

The Safari Rally uses the natural terrain around Naivasha for competitive stages. The rally does not follow a single circuit. Instead, drivers race through multiple stages across varied landscapes. The routes cover rough gravel tracks, muddy sections, and dusty roads. Rocky terrain features sharp elevation changes, dips, and bumps. Large rocks often appear on the racing line during competition.

The stages include "fesh-fesh" sand, a fine powder that can trap vehicles. River crossings force drivers to navigate through flowing water. The courses combine high-speed straights with hairpin turns, winding farm roads, and technical climbs. Elevation varies significantly across stages. One Safari Gravel Race course climbs to 2,214 meters before dropping to 1,675 meters.

The rally passes through Hell's Gate National Park, Mount Longonot National Park, and areas around Lake Naivasha. The 2026 Safari Rally featured twenty special stages covering 350.52 kilometers of competitive distance. The Service Park operates from the Wildlife Research Training Institute (WRTI) in Naivasha, where teams maintain and repair vehicles between stages.

The Safari Rally began in 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari. The event joined the World Rally Championship calendar in 1973 and remained part of the series until 2002. After an eighteen-year absence, the rally returned to the WRC in 2021. This return marked a significant milestone for Kenyan motorsport. A historical event, the East African Safari Rally, has run biennially since 2003.

The WRC Safari Rally Kenya now occurs annually in March or June. Recent editions have been based entirely in Naivasha, eliminating the traditional Nairobi start. The event attracts elite international drivers and teams. Local Kenyan drivers compete alongside WRC professionals. Thousands of fans attend the rally each year.

The rally earns recognition as one of the toughest events on the global WRC calendar. Unpredictable weather creates additional challenges. Sudden rain transforms tracks into deep mud. Wildlife crossings add an element of unpredictability. The 2026 edition introduced new soft gravel tire specifications (Hankook Dynapro R123) to handle the demanding terrain and wet surfaces.

Whistling Morans Go-Karting Circuit

Whistling Morans operates as a dedicated karting facility. The circuit features one of the longest kart race tracks in Africa. The track design prioritizes both speed and safety. The facility hosts national and regional karting championships and motorcycle events.

The circuit was built to provide an accessible entry point for aspiring Kenyan drivers. It serves as a foundation for grassroots motorsport development in the region. The facility offers well-equipped pit bays with power outlets. Individual storage containers are available for hire. An on-site shop sells kart gear, spare parts, and souvenirs. The shop also offers new and used professional karts for sale or hire.

Whistling Morans supports both commercial karting, where the facility provides resources, and professional karting, where drivers bring their own equipment. Additional amenities include swimming, cycling, skating, and rollerblading facilities. A restaurant and bar serve visitors. The venue remains open until midnight and attracts spectators, particularly around sunset.

Karting at Whistling Morans offers a safe and affordable path into motorsports. Many professional drivers, including Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel, started their careers in karting. The circuit provides crucial training opportunities for drivers with competitive aspirations but limited financial resources.
