About Taupo

Taupō International Motorsport Park stands as a premier racing venue in New Zealand's North Island, nestled on the Volcanic Plateau with Mount Tauhara providing a scenic backdrop. The circuit earned its FIA Grade 2 certification through strategic upgrades, making it New Zealand's only track with this prestigious rating. Tony Quinn acquired the facility in November 2021, adding it to his motorsport portfolio that includes Highlands Motorsport Park and Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. This track combines technical challenges with natural beauty, creating an ideal setting for high-level motorsport competition.

Circuit History

The track began its life in 1959 as a modest dirt circuit built by the Taupō Car Club. The facility underwent significant expansion between 2005 and 2006, when renowned New Zealand racing driver Chris Amon designed an extended track layout. These developments included a new pit and paddock area plus an NHRA-standard 830-meter drag strip. The circuit received further improvements to achieve FIA Grade 2 status, including modifications to Turn 9. This certification opened doors to international racing series and elevated the track's global standing.

Track Specifications

The circuit offers four different configurations to accommodate various racing events. Supercars events use the 3.32-kilometer International Circuit layout, which features 14 turns evenly split between seven left-hand and seven right-hand corners. The track runs in an anti-clockwise direction, with the layout incorporating a long 830-meter back straight that provides prime overtaking opportunities. The circuit includes two separate pit areas and a three-story pit lane complex that offers excellent facilities for teams and officials.

Technical Characteristics

Drivers consider Taupō a technical and tight circuit that demands precision. The track surface changes several times throughout a lap and has an abrasive quality that increases tire wear. Competitors must balance patience in low-speed corners with commitment through fast sections. The undulating terrain creates elevation changes that add complexity to the driving experience. The pit entry presents a particular challenge, as drivers must navigate it off the Turns 13/14 chicane before a sharp left bend. Drivers exit the pits on the right side of the track near the Turn 1 hairpin.

Racing History

Taupō hosted A1GP events from 2007 to 2009, showcasing international open-wheel racing. The circuit regularly features in domestic racing calendars with events like the Historic Grand Prix and Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Championship. Formula Regional Oceania also contests races at this venue. In 2024, the track became the new home for the Repco Supercars Championship in New Zealand, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The 2025 edition is scheduled for April 11-13, continuing the new tradition. This event solidifies Taupō's position as a key venue in Australasian motorsport.
