About Thruxton
Thruxton Circuit stands as Britain's fastest racing track, located near the village of Thruxton in Hampshire, England. This high-speed circuit stretches 2.356 miles (3.792 km) and challenges drivers with its combination of long straights and demanding corners. The circuit follows the perimeter road of a former World War II airfield, and this aviation heritage shapes its distinctive layout. Drivers reach speeds over 190 mph (300 km/h) on this track, making it a favorite for those who love pure speed.
Historical Origins
RAF Thruxton opened in 1941 as a military airfield and played a significant role in the D-Day landings. The site transitioned to motorsport after the war ended. Motorcycle racing began on the runways and perimeter roads in 1950. Car racing followed in 1952. The circuit received its official establishment as a proper racing venue in 1968. The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) selected Thruxton as its new home in 1966 after Goodwood closed. This decision secured Thruxton's position as a major British racing venue.
Technical Specifications and Layout
The circuit measures 2.356 miles in length with an average width of 14 meters. The track features 12 turns, but only two corners require heavy braking: Campbell and the Club Chicane. This characteristic contributes to its reputation as the fastest circuit in the UK. In 1993, Damon Hill drove his Williams Formula One car around Thruxton at an average speed of 147 mph (237 km/h), demonstrating the circuit's exceptional speed. The high speeds create severe tire wear, which adds an extra strategic element to racing.
Key Corners and Features
The circuit includes several named corners that honor racing legends: Allard, Campbell, Cobb, Seagrave, Noble, Goodwood, Church, and the Club Chicane. Church Corner holds the distinction of being one of Britain's fastest corners. The section known as "The Complex" combines Campbell, Cobb, and Seagrave corners into a technical sequence that tests driver skill. These corners demand precision and bravery from competitors. The track layout provides excellent spectator viewing from grandstands, elevated banking, and grassy banks.
Major Racing Events
Thruxton hosts numerous prestigious racing series. Current events include the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), British Superbike Championship (BSB), British GT Championship, British Formula Three, Formula Two, Thruxton Retro, and the British Truck Racing Championship. The circuit has also hosted international events in its history, including the FIM Endurance World Championship, European Formula Two Championship, European Formula 5000 Championship, and International Formula 3000.
Modern Facilities and Developments
The circuit underwent major resurfacing in 2000 to maintain its racing quality. Safety improvements at Church corner were completed in 2020, enhancing driver protection at this high-speed section. The most recent addition came in 2025 with the Woodham Hill Bank, a new spectator area near the Club chicane. Planning restrictions limit the circuit to 12 days of motorsport annually, making each race day special. Additional facilities include a driving school for aspiring racers, a fully equipped medical center, and a campsite located between Allard corner and the Complex. The Thruxton Kart Centre offers karting experiences for adults and children, introducing new enthusiasts to the sport.
