About Townsville Street Circuit
The Townsville Street Circuit, also known as the Reid Park Street Circuit, is a semi-permanent street circuit in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. The circuit has hosted the Supercars Championship since 2009. It combines public roads with purpose-built sections within Reid Park. The track offers a unique blend of street racing challenges and permanent racing infrastructure. Its waterfront location provides views of the Coral Sea and creates a distinctive racing environment.
Track Layout and Technical Specifications
The circuit measures 2.860 kilometers (1.777 miles) and contains 13 turns. Cars run in a clockwise direction around the track. The layout uses existing public roads including Boundary Street and Charters Towers Road. Approximately 70 percent of the circuit consists of specially constructed roads within Reid Park. The track features an elevation change of 12 meters. The FIA has assigned the circuit a Grade 3 rating. The design incorporates high-speed straights, technical corners, tight chicanes, and hairpin turns. These elements create multiple overtaking opportunities and test driver precision. Ex-champion Mark Skaife contributed to the track design. The parkland setting draws comparisons to Melbourne's Albert Park Circuit.
Racing History and Development
The circuit opened on July 10, 2009, for the inaugural Dunlop Townsville 400. State and local governments supported the development with an investment of approximately AUD $29.58 million. This funding covered the construction of permanent pit and paddock facilities within Reid Park. These permanent structures serve various events throughout the year. The circuit build requires approximately three-and-a-half weeks to construct and three weeks to dismantle. The permanent infrastructure reduces setup time compared to fully temporary street circuits.
Notable Events and Records
The circuit hosts the annual Supercars Championship event, currently called the NTI Townsville 500. The event was previously known as the Townsville 400. The format has changed several times. In 2014, organizers introduced a 500-kilometer format with two 250-kilometer races. During the COVID-19-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons, the event featured three-race sprint formats. Support categories have included the Super2 Series, Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, Australian GT Championship, Aussie Racing Cars, Stadium Super Trucks, Australian Formula 4, Super3 Series, Touring Car Masters, and TGR Australia. Jamie Whincup holds the record for most wins at Townsville with 12 victories and 23 podiums. German driver Christopher Mies set the outright lap record in 2016, recording a time of 1:11.9875 in an Audi R8 LMS GT3 during an Australian GT Championship race.
Circuit Features and Spectator Experience
The circuit borders Townsville State High School and Townsville Civic Theatre. The track crosses Ross Creek multiple times. Spectators enjoy excellent viewing opportunities from various grandstands and five viewing mounds positioned around the circuit. These facilities accommodate approximately 12,000 seated spectators. The event attracted around 150,000 spectators during its first five years. The Supercars event generates an estimated AUD $32.5 million in annual economic benefit for the region. A traditional "Track to Town Parade" occurs before each race weekend. During this parade, Supercars drive through the city, giving fans close access to the cars and drivers.
Unique Characteristics
The circuit earns the designation "hybrid circuit" because of its significant purpose-built sections within Reid Park. This differs from traditional street circuits that use only existing public roads. Driver Mark Winterbottom noted the circuit feels like a standard racing circuit within a city environment. Turn 1 resembles the high-speed Turn 8 at the Adelaide Street Circuit and provides strong passing opportunities.
