About Yas Marina Circuit
The Yas Marina Circuit opened in 2009 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Hermann Tilke designed this Formula One venue, which initially measured 5.554 kilometers. The original layout featured numerous slow-speed corners and chicanes that created limited overtaking opportunities. Drivers, teams, and fans criticized the track for producing races with minimal on-track action. In response to this feedback, the circuit underwent a major reconfiguration in 2021. The modifications transformed the track into a faster, more flowing layout that measures 5.281 kilometers (3.281 miles) with 16 corners.
The 2021 Track Reconfiguration
The 2021 restructuring focused on three specific areas. At Turn 7, the North Hairpin section received significant changes. The circuit removed the chicane that preceded this corner (formerly Turns 4, 5, and 6). Engineers widened the hairpin itself, creating a single, less severe corner with increased run-off area. The South Marina section (formerly Turns 11-14) saw the most dramatic transformation. Four sharp corners were replaced by one long, sweeping banked curve with a 5% crossfall. The Hotel Section (formerly Turns 17-20) received modifications that opened up the radii of four corners. This created a faster, full-throttle section that allows cars to race closer together. These changes achieved their primary goal: improving overtaking opportunities and creating more competitive racing.
Championship Racing and Events
The circuit hosts the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which serves as the Formula One season finale. This position frequently places the circuit at the center of championship decisions. The 2021 modifications played a direct role in that year's championship decider, demonstrating their impact on racing dynamics. The venue holds FIA Grade 1 certification and welcomes various international motorsport events beyond Formula One. The Asian Le Mans Series and 24H Series Middle East compete at Yas Marina. The circuit functions as a hub for professional racing and grassroots motorsports programs.
Technical Features and Infrastructure
The track surface uses graywacke aggregate imported from Shropshire, England. This material provides drivers with excellent grip levels. The circuit features 40 air-conditioned pit garages and five grandstand areas with full coverage from sun exposure. A total capacity of 60,000 spectators can be accommodated across the covered grandstands. The pit lane exit runs through a tunnel beneath the main track. The circuit operates the largest permanent sports lighting installation for any sporting venue globally. This system enables the unique twilight race format, where races begin in daylight and conclude under artificial lighting. The track passes underneath the LED-lit Yas Hotel and runs alongside the marina, creating distinctive visual elements.
2025 Technology Upgrade
In November 2025, the race control room received a multi-million-dirham upgrade. This enhancement made it one of the most technologically advanced race control facilities in global motorsport. The new systems include smart technology, tablet-based control for camera feeds and data management, and enhanced flexibility for integrating different racing championships. This upgrade reinforces the circuit's commitment to maintaining cutting-edge capabilities and demonstrates its continuous evolution as a premier motorsport venue. The circuit balances its modern infrastructure with the practical demands of the local climate through extensive cooling systems and covered facilities across the venue.
