The Mexican GP returns to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Stadium Section and Peraltada

2026 Technical Regulations

The 2026 Formula 1 season introduces major changes to both cars and power units. These regulations aim to promote closer racing and create new strategic possibilities.

Power Unit Changes

The 2026 power units maintain the turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine but remove the Motor Generator Unit – Heat (MGU-H). The Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic (MGU-K) increases its output from 120 kW to 350 kW, delivering approximately 470 additional horsepower. This change creates a near 50/50 split between combustion and electrical energy.

Energy recovery capacity nearly doubles to around 8.5 MJ per lap. All cars will run on 100% advanced sustainable fuels. Drivers will manage energy using two modes: Recharge mode for harvesting electrical energy and Boost mode for deploying the Energy Recovery System.

Chassis and Aerodynamics

The 2026 cars become smaller and lighter. The maximum wheelbase reduces from 360 cm to 340 cm. Width decreases from 200 cm to 190 cm. The minimum mass drops by 30 kg to 768 kg. Tyre widths also decrease.

Active aerodynamics appear on both front and rear wings for the first time. This system allows cars to switch between two configurations. Straight Mode (X-mode) reduces drag for higher speeds on straights. Corner Mode (Z-mode) provides increased downforce through turns.

The Drag Reduction System (DRS) no longer exists. A new Overtake Mode replaces it, providing extra electrical power to a chasing car within one second of the car ahead. This change enables more strategic overtaking opportunities. Overall downforce decreases by 15-30%, and aerodynamic drag reduces by up to 40%.

Teams and Power Unit Suppliers

The 2026 season features significant changes to the grid and power unit supply structure. Several new partnerships and entries reshape the competitive landscape.

Audi enters Formula 1 as a works team after acquiring Sauber, developing its own power units. Cadillac debuts as an eleventh team, using Ferrari power units. History of the Mexican Grand Prix

The Mexican Grand Prix first ran as a non-championship event in 1962. The race joined the official Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 1963. The circuit was originally known as Magdalena Mixhuca before being renamed Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in 1979. The name honors Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez, two Mexican racing brothers. Ricardo died in a crash at the circuit in 1962, and Pedro was also killed while racing nine years later.

The race left the F1 calendar twice, from 1971 to 1985 and from 1993 to 2014. Safety concerns and overcrowding issues led to these absences. Formula 1 returned to Mexico City in 2015. The event gained official status as the Mexico City Grand Prix in 2021. The circuit holds a contract to host Formula 1 through at least 2028.
