About Silverstone
The FIA Formula 3 Championship returns to Silverstone Circuit for the 2026 season, bringing the next generation of single-seater racing talent to one of England's most celebrated motor racing venues. This F3 event runs alongside the Formula 1 and Formula 2 Championships, offering fans a comprehensive weekend of high-level motorsport competition at Silverstone.
Race Weekend Format
The Silverstone F3 weekend follows the standard championship format. Teams and drivers participate in a 45-minute free practice session, followed by a 30-minute qualifying session that determines grid positions. The weekend features both a sprint race, lasting 40 minutes plus one lap, and a feature race. A regulation change for the 2026 season means grid penalties from one event now apply to the feature race at the next round, rather than the sprint race as in previous years.
The Silverstone Circuit
Silverstone Circuit sits near the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury. The British Racing Drivers' Club owns and operates this facility, which holds an FIA Grade 1 license and can accommodate 164,000 spectators. The circuit straddles the border between Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, a unique geographical feature among major racing venues.
The 2026 F3 race uses the Arena Grand Prix Circuit layout, measuring 5.891 kilometers (3.660 miles) with 18 corners. This configuration has served as the primary layout since 2011. The track combines high-speed sections like the Hangar Straight and Wellington Straight with technical corner sequences including Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel Corner. Maggotts Corner stands out as the fastest turn on the circuit, testing driver skill and car performance.
Circuit History
Silverstone began as RAF Silverstone, a Royal Air Force bomber station that operated from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. An impromptu race in September 1947 marked its racing origins, later nicknamed the "Mutton Grand Prix" after a driver collided with a sheep. The venue hosted the first British Grand Prix in 1948 and, more significantly, the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship race on May 13, 1950. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret attended that 1950 race, marking the only time a reigning monarch has visited the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Championship Competitors
The 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship brings together 30 drivers across multiple teams. The season features 16 rookies alongside 14 returning drivers, creating a competitive blend of experience and fresh talent. Recent junior single-seater champions join the grid, including Freddie Slater from Formula Regional Europe, Ugo Ugochukwu from FR Oceania, Mattia Colnaghi from Eurocup-3, and Fionn McLaughlin from British F4. Other confirmed competitors include Théophile Naël, Patrick Heuzenroeder, Enzo Deligny, Hiyu Yamakoshi, and Bruno del Pino. Campos Racing enters the season as the defending Teams' Champion from 2025.
Technical Specifications
The FIA Formula 3 Championship operates as a spec series, meaning all teams compete with identical equipment. The 2026 season uses the Dallara F3 2025 chassis, introduced in 2025 and scheduled for use through 2027. This ensures competition focuses on driver skill and team strategy rather than technical advantages.
Each car features a Mecachrome 6-cylinder 3.4-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 380 horsepower at 8000 rpm. The cars reach a top speed of 300 km/h and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, achieving 0-200 km/h in 7.7 seconds. The chassis uses carbon-Kevlar honeycomb construction, designed by Dallara Automobili. Safety features include a steel Halo device and wheel tether cables, meeting FIA F3 2025 safety standards.
The cars employ a sequential gearbox with an electro-hydraulic gear shift system. Pirelli supplies 16-inch tires in three different compounds for varying track conditions. An F1-style Drag Reduction System (DRS) provides overtaking opportunities on designated straights. The series demonstrates environmental commitment by running on advanced fuel that meets the FIA's 100% sustainable fuel standard.
Formula 3 Legacy at Silverstone
Formula 3 racing has deep roots at Silverstone. The 500cc Formula 3 class served as the sole support race at the first Formula 1 World Championship event in 1950. Since the FIA Formula 3 Championship rebranded in 2019, Silverstone has remained a fixture on the calendar. The circuit even hosted two championship rounds during the 2020 season, demonstrating its importance to the series.
Distinctive Circuit Features
The "Silverstone Hare" serves as an unofficial mascot for the circuit, occasionally appearing trackside during race meetings. A hare was famously struck by a car during the 1950 British Grand Prix, cementing this connection. The circuit holds the distinction of hosting the very first Formula 1 World Championship race, earning its place in motorsport history. Fan attendance at Silverstone remains strong, with the circuit recording 480,000 visitors over a single weekend in 2023.
The Silverstone F3 event offers fans an opportunity to witness emerging talent competing on the same circuit that launched Formula 1 as a world championship. The combination of young drivers, equal machinery, and a challenging circuit layout creates competitive racing throughout the field.
