About Monaco E-Prix (Round 9)
The Monaco E-Prix (Round 9) brings fully electric formula-e racing to the legendary Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo. This event marks a special moment for the championship as it features a double-header format with two complete races taking place on the famous street circuit. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship showcases cutting-edge electric vehicle technology alongside competitive wheel-to-wheel racing through the streets of the Principality.
Circuit de Monaco Details
The formula-e cars will race on the full Circuit de Monaco layout, measuring 3.337 km (2.074 miles). This is the same configuration used for Formula 1's most prestigious race. The street circuit winds through Monte Carlo and along the harbor, featuring challenging sections that test driver skill and energy management.
Key sections include Sainte-Dévote, Beau Rivage, Casino Square, the Tunnel, Port Hercule, the Swimming Pool complex, La Rascasse, and the Grand Hotel Hairpin. The narrow track demands precision driving, while elevation changes and tight corners require careful battery management throughout each race.
Teams and Drivers
The 2026 season features 10 teams and 20 drivers competing in the championship. Oliver Rowland from the Nissan Formula E Team holds the reigning world champion title. The Porsche Formula E Team currently leads both the teams' and manufacturers' championships.
Complete Team Lineup
Andretti fields Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich with Porsche powertrains. Citroën runs Nick Cassidy and Jean-Eric Vergne using Stellantis powertrains. Cupra Kiro enters Dan Ticktum and Pepe Marti with Porsche power. DS Penske features Maximilian Günther and Taylor Barnard on Stellantis powertrains.
Envision Racing runs Sebastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson with Jaguar powertrains. Jaguar TCS Racing fields Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix Da Costa. Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team enters Lucas Di Grassi and Zane Maloney. Mahindra Racing features Edoardo Mortara and Nyck De Vries. Nissan Formula E Team runs Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato. Porsche Formula E Team fields Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller.
Pascal Wehrlein aims to defend Porsche's championships, while Nick Cassidy brings his talents to the new Citroën team. Felipe Drugovich, the 2022 Formula 2 champion, and Pepe Marti represent notable additions to the formula-e grid.
GEN3 Evo Technology
The Monaco E-Prix (Round 9) will feature the GEN3 Evo car in its final season before new regulations arrive. This machine represents the quickest accelerating FIA single-seater race car, reaching 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds. The acceleration surpasses current Formula 1 cars by 30% and improves on the previous GEN3 model by 36%.
Performance Enhancements
The GEN3 Evo delivers approximately 2% better performance compared to its predecessor. This translates to roughly 2 seconds faster qualifying laps around the Circuit de Monaco. The car features improved aerodynamics with a body kit built for close racing. All-wheel drive activates during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode periods, providing maximum acceleration and control.
Technical Specifications
Hankook iON tires offer 5-10% more grip and contain 35% recycled and sustainable materials. The cars reach a top speed of 200 mph while maintaining electric motor efficiency above 95%. This efficiency far exceeds typical combustion engines. The 600kw regenerative braking system recovers nearly 50% of the energy needed for each race. The 47 kWh liquid-cooled battery provides 38.5 kWh of usable capacity during races.
The GEN3 Evo operates as the first net-zero carbon race car in the first net-zero carbon motorsport series. Sustainable battery development remains central to the formula-e mission.
Monaco E-Prix History
Formula-e first visited Monaco in 2015. Early races used a shortened version of the circuit, but since 2022 the series has utilized the complete Grand Prix layout. This change created more opportunities for overtaking on the challenging street circuit.
Sébastien Buemi leads all drivers with three victories at the Monaco E-Prix, earning recognition as "Mr. Monaco" in formula-e. The 2026 edition represents the first time the series will host a double-header format on these streets, offering fans twice the racing action.
What Makes This Event Special
The Monaco E-Prix (Round 9) delivers a different experience compared to traditional motorsport despite sharing the same circuit. Formula-e cars produce instant torque, creating visually striking corner exits. Race strategy centers on energy regeneration and Attack Mode activations rather than fuel consumption.
The lower noise levels create a more relaxed atmosphere suitable for families. The event attracts electric vehicle enthusiasts and visitors exploring Monte Carlo. The Fan Village on Quai Antoine 1er offers simulators, live music, and activities for all ages. Spectators can watch from terraces that provide excellent viewing angles of the Circuit de Monaco action.
The double-header format means two complete race experiences, each with practice sessions, qualifying, and main races. This extended racing program provides more opportunities to see the formula-e drivers and teams competing at the highest level. The combination of electric racing technology, Monaco's prestigious location, and the challenging street circuit creates a compelling event for fans following the championship.
