About Round 10
Round 10 of the GT World Challenge Europe returns to Portimão, Portugal for the 2026 season. The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve hosts this Endurance Cup race, bringing world-class GT3 competition back to the Algarve region. This marks the series' return to Portimão as an Endurance Cup venue for the first time since 2015, when it last appeared on the calendar as a Sprint Cup location.
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve
The circuit stretches 4.653 kilometers through the Portuguese landscape near Portimão. Ricardo Pina, Arquitectos designed this facility, which opened in October 2008. The track features 16 turns that challenge drivers with significant elevation changes. The vertical difference between the highest and lowest points measures 24 meters, creating what many drivers describe as a "roller coaster" experience.
The circuit layout draws inspiration from legendary European tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring. It holds an FIA Grade 1 license, which qualifies it to host the highest levels of international motorsport. The facility can accommodate up to 100,000 spectators and includes modern amenities throughout the complex.
Endurance Cup Format
The GT World Challenge Europe Portimão round features a three-hour endurance race. This format tests both driver skill and team strategy over an extended period. The Endurance Cup brings together professional racing teams and drivers from across the globe to compete in one of five championship rounds.
Support races add to the weekend program. The GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli and the GT4 European Series powered by RAFA Racing Club join the main event, creating a full weekend of GT racing action.
Teams and Drivers
The 2026 season features entries from top manufacturers including Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. Team WRT fields multiple BMW M4 GT3 Evo entries, with Kelvin van der Linde and Charles Weerts confirmed for their program. Valentino Rossi joins Max Hesse and Dan Harper in another Team WRT Endurance Cup entry.
Ford Racing's HRT Ford Racing runs a two-car Endurance Cup effort with Finn Wiebelhaus, Maxime Oosten, Eduardo Coseteng, and Arjun Maini. AF Corse has updated its Pro line-up to include Arthur Leclerc, Sean Gelael, Lilou Wadoux, Alessio Rovera, Nicklas Nielsen, and Tommaso Mosca. Pure Rxcing moves to the Silver Cup category with Aliaksandr Malykhin, Aleksei Nesov, and Max Hofer.
Tresor Attempto Racing fields Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II entries with drivers including Ariel Levi, Sebastian Øgaard, Rocco Mazzola, Andrea Frassineti, Alex Aka, and Dylan Pereira. New team KPX Motorsport enters a BMW M4 GT3 Evo with Peter Kox and his daughter Stephane in the Sprint Cup.
GT3 Technical Regulations
The GT World Challenge Europe uses GT3-specification race cars. These machines are modified production vehicles built to FIA technical regulations. SRO Motorsports Group implements a Balance of Performance system to create equal competition between different manufacturers and models.
Pirelli serves as the exclusive tire supplier for the championship. The Portuguese circuit places high demands on tires due to the combination of elevation changes and varied corner types. Teams must manage tire wear carefully during the three-hour race distance. Some manufacturers may introduce updated versions of their GT3 cars, with Porsche potentially fielding an optimized 911 GT3 R featuring revised aerodynamics and improved handling characteristics.
Circuit Heritage
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve was built in just seven months, a remarkable achievement for a modern racing facility. The total project cost reached approximately €195 million and included a karting track, technology park, hotel, and sports complex alongside the main circuit.
Portimão has hosted major international motorsport series including MotoGP, World Superbike, European Le Mans Series, FIA GT, WTCC, and GP2. Formula 1 held the Portuguese Grand Prix at this venue in 2020 and 2021, showcasing the circuit's capability to handle premier racing series.
Track Characteristics
The circuit combines tight, technical sections with fast, flowing corners. This mix challenges GT3 cars in different ways throughout a lap. The undulating layout creates unique racing opportunities, particularly under braking where elevation changes affect car balance and grip levels.
The track surface and corner combinations generate significant sliding energy, which impacts tire management strategies. Teams must balance outright speed with tire conservation over the three-hour race distance. The variety of corner speeds and types allows different car setups to find competitive pace, often leading to close racing between various manufacturers.
The GT World Challenge Europe at Portimão brings together international competition, a challenging circuit, and proven racing heritage. The three-hour format provides ample opportunity for strategic variation and on-track battles between GT3 machinery from leading manufacturers.
