Virginia International Raceway History

Virginia International Raceway first opened on August 3, 1957. A group of builders using a bulldozer created the original track, which quickly became popular on the SCCA circuit. Carroll Shelby won the first race, an SCCA event. The facility represents one of the first permanent road racing circuits in the United States.

The track closed in 1974 during the gas shortage crisis. Connie Nyholm and Harvey Siegel reopened Virginia International Raceway in March 2000 as America's first "Motorsport Resort." They renovated the facility into a modern road racing circuit. The track has hosted important races including the SCCA National Sports Car Championship and IMSA GT Championship.

Track Features and Amenities

Virginia International Raceway operates as a motorsport resort with lodging, dining facilities, a driver's club, karting, and shooting ranges. Fans enjoy open paddock access, autograph sessions, and grid walks. The venue combines competitive racing with Southern hospitality. Nearby attractions include the Danville River District, wineries, and breweries.

A landmark oak tree stood at the track for over 150 years before falling in 2013 after a lightning strike. Carroll Shelby famously stated, "One lap at VIR is like a hundred at Watkins Glen," emphasizing the circuit's challenging nature.

Race Results and Performance

Koch and Boehm in the #97 BMW M4 GT4 EVO secured overall and Silver class victories in both races. Craven and Green in the #94 BMW M4 GT4 EVO won the Pro-Am class in both races. Clay and Postins took the Am class victory in Race 1, while the Lumsden duo won the Am class in Race 2.
