About Good Ranchers 250
The Good Ranchers 250 brought IndyCar racing back to Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, after an eight-year absence. This race covered 250 laps on the distinctive 1.022-mile oval, totaling 250 miles of high-speed competition. Josef Newgarden of Team Penske secured the victory, with Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global finishing second and David Malukas of Team Penske claiming third place. Malukas also earned his first career pole position for this event.
Phoenix Raceway Circuit Details
Phoenix Raceway features a unique dogleg oval configuration that sets it apart from other tracks in the series. The 1.022-mile asphalt circuit includes four turns with varied banking angles. The frontstretch has 9 degrees of banking, while the backstretch sits at 3 degrees. Turns 1 and 2 feature 9 degrees of banking, and Turns 3 and 4 have 11 degrees. The distinctive dogleg on the backstretch creates opportunities for passing and adds a strategic element to race craft. This characteristic has earned the venue its nickname as "the desert oddball."
Race Participants and Results
Twenty-five drivers competed in the Good Ranchers 250, representing the top teams in the NTT IndyCar Series. Team Penske, Andretti Global, Arrow McLaren, Chip Ganassi Racing, Meyer Shank Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and other leading organizations fielded entries. Beyond the podium finishers, the top ten included Pato O'Ward, Marcus Armstrong, Alexander Rossi, Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin, Graham Rahal, and Kyffin Simpson.
Five drivers in the field had previous IndyCar experience at Phoenix Raceway: Scott Dixon, who won at the track in 2016; Josef Newgarden, the 2018 winner; Will Power; Graham Rahal; and Alexander Rossi. This veteran knowledge added depth to the competition on the challenging oval.
Technical Specifications
All cars in the NTT IndyCar Series utilize the Dallara IR-18 spec chassis with a common aero kit. The powerplants are 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines from either Honda or Chevrolet, producing over 700 horsepower. The series runs on Sunoco E85 ethanol fuel, and Firestone serves as the exclusive tire supplier.
Hybrid Power System
The series incorporates a hybrid energy recovery system that works with the V6 engine. This system sits between the engine and transmission and uses 20 supercapacitors to store and release energy. The hybrid unit provides up to 60 additional horsepower, improving acceleration out of corners and down the straights.
Safety Features
New safety regulations included superspeedway flaps mounted atop the rear tire ramps. These flaps deploy during a spin to reduce the chance of the car becoming airborne. Phoenix Raceway utilized the NASCAR SAFER Barrier configuration for the shared weekend with stock car racing.
IndyCar History at Phoenix
The Good Ranchers 250 marked the return of IndyCar competition to Phoenix Raceway after the series last raced there in 2018. IndyCar has a long history at this venue, competing there from 1964 through 2005, then returning from 2016 to 2018. The track hosted its inaugural oval race in March 1964, with A.J. Foyt taking the victory. Al Unser holds the record for most IndyCar wins at Phoenix with six victories.
Phoenix Raceway opened in 1964 and has undergone significant renovations over recent years. These updates included relocating the start/finish line and renumbering the corners, though the track maintains its core 1-mile oval character.
Desert Double Weekend
The Good Ranchers 250 was part of a Desert Double weekend, sharing the schedule with NASCAR Cup Series and O'Reilly Auto Parts Series races. This collaboration marked the first time since 2023 that the Cup Series and IndyCar Series competed at Phoenix Raceway during the same weekend. The shared weekend brought together fans of multiple racing disciplines.
Unique Aspects of Phoenix Raceway
The desert location of Phoenix Raceway creates specific challenges and characteristics. Track officials employ Snake Wranglers before races to clear rattlesnakes from the speedway grounds and surrounding hills. The facility has a seating capacity of 42,000 and sits in the Arizona desert landscape near Avondale.
The 2026 season introduced INDYCAR Officiating, a new independent, not-for-profit organization responsible for all competition officiating. This change brought a fresh approach to race management and enforcement of rules across all series events, including the Good Ranchers 250.
