About Official Prologue - IMOLA
The Official Prologue - IMOLA represents a crucial pre-season test for the FIA World Endurance Championship at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. This event provides teams and drivers with eight hours of track time at Imola to prepare for the championship season ahead. The WEC Official Prologue at Imola offers teams two sessions to test their cars and fine-tune performance on this historic Italian circuit.
The Imola Circuit
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari stretches 4.909 kilometers and features 19 turns. The circuit runs anti-clockwise, which sets it apart from most racing venues on the WEC calendar. Drivers navigate challenging corners including Tamburello, Acque Minerali, and Rivazza. Hypercar competitors reach top speeds near 315 km/h on this demanding layout.
The circuit holds an FIA Grade 1 license and demands precision from every driver. The track maintains its old-school character, requiring drivers to demonstrate skill and confidence through fast, flowing sections. The layout tests both car and driver over extended racing periods.
WEC Categories and Participants
Hypercar Class
The Hypercar category features factory teams from Alpine, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot, and Toyota. Genesis Magma Racing joins the field for the 2026 season. The category includes private entries alongside manufacturer teams, creating a diverse grid of prototype machinery.
Toyota continues to develop their TR010 Hybrid Hypercar. Ferrari enters as reigning manufacturers' champions, racing on home soil at Imola. The Japanese and European manufacturers bring different technical approaches to the top WEC class.
LMGT3 Class
Nine manufacturers compete in LMGT3: Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. The class features evo-spec models from several manufacturers, bringing updated GT machinery to the grid. LMGT3 offers close competition between different sports car platforms.
Driver Lineup
The grid includes former Formula 1 racer Logan Sargeant with Proton Competition. Victor Martins, the 2022 FIA Formula 3 Champion, races for Alpine Endurance Team. António Félix da Costa also joins the Alpine lineup. The field combines experienced endurance racing veterans with talented newcomers to the series.
Technical Regulations
Hypercar Technical Rules
New Hypercar homologations require an Energy Recovery System from 2026 forward. This regulation marks the end of non-hybrid prototypes in the top class. All Hypercars must now incorporate hybrid technology into their powertrains.
Aerodynamic regulations include stricter rear wing flex limitations. Teams must maintain rear wing deflection under 2.5 mm when subjected to a 100 N load. The rules also standardize wing mounting, vertical supports, and front skid rigidity across different manufacturers.
The framework for performance development allowances provides teams with options to address performance gaps. These technical adjustments help maintain competitive balance throughout the season.
Success Handicap System
The WEC implements a success handicap for both Hypercar and LMGT3 categories. This system converts into mass adjustments or power modifications. The handicap applies to all races except the 24 Hours of Le Mans, aiming to balance performance across different manufacturers.
LMGT3 Updates
Evolution-specification models from Porsche, Ford, and Ferrari debut in LMGT3. These updated cars bring refined aerodynamics and improved performance to the GT category.
Circuit History
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari opened in 1953. The circuit bears the name of Enzo Ferrari and his son Dino, honoring the legendary Ferrari family. Imola hosted Formula One racing from 1981 to 2006, including the San Marino Grand Prix.
Endurance racing at Imola includes the historical 1000 km of Imola in 1974. The European Le Mans Series has also competed at this venue. The WEC continues this endurance racing tradition at the Italian circuit.
The circuit serves as a home venue for Scuderia Ferrari. Italian fans, known as Tifosi, provide passionate support throughout race weekends. Spectators gather close to the track barriers and show strong enthusiasm for all competing teams.
Event Atmosphere
The WEC at Imola creates a distinctive racing atmosphere. Fans demonstrate deep knowledge of endurance racing and appreciate the technical aspects of both Hypercar and LMGT3 competition. The Italian crowd brings energy to the paddock and grandstands.
Spectators traditionally gather along the main straight after races conclude. This access creates a unique connection between fans and the sport. The Official Prologue at Imola gives fans an early opportunity to see all teams testing before the season begins.
The combination of challenging circuit layout, diverse manufacturer participation, and passionate fans makes the WEC events at Imola memorable occasions. The Official Prologue serves as an important preparation phase where teams work through their programs and gather data for the championship ahead.
