About Qatar 1812km

The Qatar 1812km returns to Lusail International Circuit for the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship season. This unique endurance race takes place at one of motorsport's most modern facilities, located just north of Doha, Qatar. The event name honors Qatar's National Day, celebrated on December 18, reflected in the 1812-kilometer target race distance.

Race Format and Duration

The Qatar 1812km challenges competitors across a maximum of 10 hours of racing. This makes it the second-longest race on the WEC calendar. Teams and drivers face the transition from daylight conditions to night racing under Lusail's advanced floodlight system. The temperature changes between day and night create strategic challenges for tire management and car setup.

Lusail International Circuit

Lusail International Circuit spans 5.419 kilometers and features 16 turns in a clockwise configuration. The circuit's main straight measures 1.068 kilometers, providing opportunities for high-speed overtaking. The track surface offers high grip levels, while the flat layout and flowing high-speed corners demand precision from drivers.

The circuit holds an FIA Grade 1 license following extensive renovations. The pit building stretches 402 meters, recognized by Guinness World Records for its length, and contains fifty team garages. Grandstand seating accommodates 40,000 spectators, with total capacity reaching 52,000.

Track Characteristics

The circuit's design creates specific challenges for competitors. The uniform appearance can make it difficult for drivers to identify reference points. The final sector contains flowing, high-speed turns where close following proves challenging. Artificial grass surrounds the track to prevent desert sand encroachment.

Competition Categories

The 2026 Qatar 1812km features two primary categories from the WEC championship structure.

Hypercar Class

The premier Hypercar class brings together the fastest prototypes in endurance racing. The 2026 grid comprises 17 cars representing eight factory teams and one private entry. Major manufacturers competing include Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, Ferrari, Peugeot, and Aston Martin with THOR Team. Genesis Magma Racing joins the championship with two GMR-001 Hypercars. Ferrari AF Corse returns with two 499P machines.

LMGT3 Class

The LMGT3 category features 18 production-based race cars. Nine manufacturers compete in this class: Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. Garage 59 manages two McLaren 720S LMGT3 Evos, while Racing Team Turkey enters a Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R with support from TF Sport. Manthey returns with two Porsche 911 GT3 R Evos.

Technical Regulations

The Hypercar technical regulations remain stable through 2032, providing continuity for manufacturers. Several teams introduce significant updates to their Hypercar machinery, with Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, and Alpine implementing major developments. The LMGT3 category sees new Evo-spec models from Porsche, Ford, and Ferrari.

Strategic Elements

Tire management plays a crucial role at Lusail International Circuit. The high-grip surface combined with the temperature variations between day and night racing requires careful strategy. Teams must balance performance across different conditions while managing fuel consumption and driver stint lengths across the 10-hour duration.

Circuit History

Lusail International Circuit opened in 2004 and initially hosted MotoGP events. The facility gained recognition for hosting the first-ever MotoGP night race. The circuit joined the WEC calendar in 2024 under a six-year contract. The facility has also hosted Formula 1, demonstrating its capability to accommodate top-level motorsport categories.

What Makes This Event Special

The Qatar 1812km offers a unique endurance challenge within the WEC season. The race distance and duration test both machinery and driver performance across changing conditions. The visual spectacle of racing under Lusail's floodlights creates a distinctive atmosphere. The modern facilities and high-speed circuit layout combine to create demanding racing conditions that reward both speed and consistency.

The event provides teams with a crucial opportunity to score championship points across both the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories. With multiple manufacturers competing across both classes, the competition remains close throughout the field.
