Movable Aerodynamics

Movable aerodynamics refers to racing car components that can change position or shape during a race to adjust how air flows over and around the vehicle, allowing the car to be faster on straights or grip better in corners depending on what the driver needs at that moment.

In simple terms, imagine if you could make your car more slippery through the air when you want to go really fast in a straight line, then instantly make it stick to the road better when you need to turn a corner. That's exactly what movable aerodynamics does. Traditional race cars have fixed wings and body parts that can't change, so engineers have to choose one setup that works okay everywhere but isn't perfect anywhere. Movable aerodynamics solves this problem by letting the car adapt on the fly.

The most famous example of this technology is the Drag Reduction System, commonly called DRS, which Formula 1 used from 2011 through 2025. This system allowed drivers to open a flap on their rear wing when they were close behind another car, making their vehicle more aerodynamic and giving them extra speed to help overtake. The flap would open in special zones on the track, reducing air resistance and adding several miles per hour to their top speed.

When a race car has more downforce, it gets pushed harder onto the track surface, which means the tires grip better and the car can go through corners faster without sliding off. However, creating downforce also creates drag, which is like invisible resistance that slows the car down on straight sections. This is the fundamental trade-off that movable aerodynamics helps solve.

Starting in 2026, Formula 1 will introduce a more advanced system called active aerodynamics. Unlike DRS, which only worked when following another car, this new system will feature movable front and rear wings that drivers can adjust on every lap. The system will have two modes: one that reduces drag for straights and another that maximizes downforce for corners. Drivers will manually switch between these modes, adding another skill element to racing.

The concept isn't entirely new. Back in the 1960s, American engineer Jim Hall created revolutionary Chaparral race cars with movable wings and flaps that drivers could adjust using a pedal. These pioneering designs showed how powerful active aero could be, though many early systems were eventually banned due to safety concerns after some accidents occurred.

Other racing series beyond Formula 1 have also experimented with movable aerodynamic devices. The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, Formula 2, and Formula 3 have all used DRS-style systems at various times. Some sports car prototypes have featured adjustable elements designed to improve both performance and fuel efficiency during long endurance races.

Modern regulations carefully control how and when teams can use movable aerodynamics. Race organizers want to ensure these systems make racing more exciting and competitive without creating unfair advantages or safety risks. The goal is to help cars follow each other more closely and make overtaking easier, which creates better racing for fans to watch.
