TecPro Barrier
A TecPro Barrier is a modern safety system used in motorsport that consists of modular plastic blocks filled with energy-absorbing foam, designed to protect drivers by cushioning impact when race cars crash into track walls.
These barriers are made from tough polyethylene plastic blocks that connect together using strong nylon straps, creating a flexible wall that can be placed along dangerous sections of a race track. Think of them as giant building blocks that work together to catch a crashing car safely, similar to how an airbag protects you in a road car.
When a race car hits a TecPro Barrier at high speed, the foam-filled blocks absorb the crash energy instead of letting the car bounce back onto the track. This absorption dramatically reduces the G-forces—the violent pushing and pulling forces—that a driver's body experiences during impact, which helps prevent serious injuries.
TecPro Barriers typically use a two-layer design. The first layer of blocks takes the initial hit, while a second layer behind it provides extra cushioning. Some blocks contain steel sheets for added strength, and they're often positioned in front of traditional metal Armco barriers to create multiple zones of protection.
These barriers are especially common in Formula 1 racing and can be found at famous circuits like Silverstone in the UK, Monza in Italy, and street circuits like Monaco and Singapore. Race organizers place them in areas where cars are most likely to crash at high speeds, such as the outside of fast corners or at the end of long straightaways.
One major advantage of TecPro Barriers over older safety systems like stacked tire walls is their modular design. Track workers can quickly assemble, take apart, and rearrange these barriers to fit different track layouts. This makes them perfect for temporary street circuits that are built and dismantled for each race. A single operator can reset sections of barrier in just 15 minutes after a crash.
The sealed plastic construction also means TecPro Barriers don't absorb water or collect debris like old tire walls did, making them more durable and reliable over time. They're also considered more environmentally friendly than using old tires for safety barriers.
The FIA, which is the governing body for international motorsport, sets strict standards for barrier systems before certifying any track for competition. TecPro Barriers meet these high safety requirements and have become standard equipment at professional racing circuits worldwide, particularly in European motorsport. While American racing series like NASCAR and IndyCar often use a similar system called SAFER barriers, TecPro Barriers remain the preferred choice in Formula 1 and many touring car championships.
