About Portimão

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve stands as Portugal's premier racing facility. The circuit sits near the coastal city of Portimão in the Algarve region. Construction teams completed this modern motorsport complex in just seven months, and it opened its doors in October 2008. Ricardo Pina designed the track with a vision to create a challenging venue that tests both drivers and machines. The circuit earned its reputation quickly, with racers describing it as a "rollercoaster" because of its dramatic elevation changes and flowing layout.

Technical Specifications

The circuit holds FIA Grade 1 and FIM Grade A homologation. This certification allows the venue to host the highest levels of car and motorcycle racing. The main Grand Prix circuit measures 4.653 kilometers (2.891 miles) in length for FIA events. The Formula One configuration extends to 4.684 kilometers, while the motorcycle layout runs 4.592 kilometers. Drivers navigate 15 to 16 corners depending on the specific configuration used. The track offers 32 different layout options, with total perimeters ranging from 3.465 kilometers to 4.684 kilometers. Track width varies between 14 and 18 meters, providing ample space for overtaking. The main straight stretches approximately 969 to 970 meters, giving vehicles significant speed before heavy braking zones.

Elevation and Track Character

Elevation changes define this circuit's character. The track rises and falls by up to 29.2 meters total, with a 24-meter difference between the highest and lowest points. The maximum uphill gradient reaches 6.2 percent, while the steepest descent hits 12.0 percent. These gradients create blind crests and surprising corner entries that challenge driver skill and bravery. The track features banking up to 8.0 percent, with a minimum of 2.0 percent. Many corners combine off-camber sections with elevation changes, similar to classic European circuits like the old Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps. The circuit can accommodate 100,000 spectators across its viewing areas.

Racing History

The World Superbike Championship held the first major event at Portimão on November 2, 2008. This inaugural race marked the beginning of a strong relationship with international motorcycle racing. Formula One arrived in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic calendar changes. Lewis Hamilton made history at Portimão in 2020, securing his record-breaking 92nd Grand Prix victory. The circuit hosted F1 again in 2021, and races are scheduled for 2027 and 2028. MotoGP started racing at Portimão in 2020 and has returned annually since then.

Major Championships and Events

The circuit has welcomed numerous prestigious series beyond F1 and MotoGP. World Superbike has raced here from 2008-2015 and from 2017 to the present. The European Le Mans Series competed here in 2009-2010 and returned from 2017 onward. The FIA World Endurance Championship held 6-hour races in 2021 and 2023. Other visitors include GT World Challenge Europe, DTM, Ferrari Challenge Europe, Porsche Cup Brasil, TCR World Tour, WTCC, A1 Grand Prix, and FIA GT.

Circuit Complex and Features

The Algarve Motorsports Park extends beyond the main racing circuit. The complex includes the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, an off-road track, a technology park, a five-star hotel, a sports complex, and residential apartments. The total construction cost reached approximately €195 million. One corner bears the name of Craig Jones, a World Supersport rider who died in 2008. A monument honoring Jones stands at the main access roundabout. The track's design provides excellent spectator views from all grandstand positions. The Grand Tour television show filmed its debut episode here in 2016, featuring the McLaren P1, Porsche 918, and Ferrari LaFerrari.
