About Gran Canaria

The Circuito de Maspalomas stands as the only permanent speed circuit in the Canary Islands. This motorsport facility is located in the south of Gran Canaria, Spain, near the Aeródromo de El Berriel in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The circuit serves as a central hub for regional motorsport and offers visitors unique driving experiences against a backdrop of forest, beach, and ocean views. Gran Canaria's favorable weather conditions make the circuit accessible year-round for racing and training activities.

Technical Specifications

The circuit surface consists of abrasive volcanic asphalt that provides high grip levels for vehicles. The track reaches a maximum slope of 9%, which adds challenge to the driving experience. The circuit does not hold an FIA Grade classification. Multiple track configurations allow the facility to host different types of motorsport events and driving activities.

Track Configurations

The main track extends 4,400 meters (2.734 miles) when fully completed. This configuration features 15 turns, divided into 5 right-hand corners and 10 left-hand corners. The main straight measures 24 meters in width, while the rest of the circuit maintains a width of 10 meters. A shorter track configuration measures 2,250 meters in total length with a consistent 10-meter width throughout. Some sources reference a layout of 2,271 meters (2.3 km or 1.4 miles), and reports mention a 5.6 km version that may correspond to rally stages or simulation versions. The circuit includes 24 pits in its permanent paddock area.

Development History

The circuit began development in 1996 with the construction of a small take-off runway connected to the track. In 1998, developers created a "beach version" of the circuit. The take-off runway was separated from the circuit in 2005, which allowed both facilities to operate independently. Since then, the circuit has evolved to support various motorsport disciplines and commercial driving experiences.

Racing and Events

The Circuito de Maspalomas hosts regular regional and club-level motorsport events. Different motorcycling and touring car championships use the facility for testing and competition. The circuit will play a significant role in the 2026 WRC Rally Islas Canarias. For the rally's 50th anniversary, a special stage called "BP Ultimate - Circuito Islas Canarias" will take place at the circuit. This 2.27 km stage will feature a stadium-style showdown format. The rally itinerary also includes "Maspalomas 1," a 13.47 km stage.

Driving Experiences and Commercial Activities

The circuit offers supercar driving experiences with high-performance vehicles. Visitors can drive Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ariel Atoms, and Mazda MX5s under professional instruction. These experiences range from short lap sessions to extended packages with training components. The facility hosts advanced driving courses, driving tests, and corporate team-building events for all skill levels. An exclusive Mazda MX5 race series provides race training and competition for groups.

Circuit Features and Location

The circuit is located just minutes from Maspalomas, next to the Aeroclub. Permanent paddock and pit areas support racing operations. Support buildings house race control and timing systems. Grandstands provide spectator viewing areas for events. The circuit's proximity to the main street means engine sounds from the track reach nearby areas. The unique location combines motorsport facilities with the natural beauty of Gran Canaria's southern coast, creating a distinctive venue for both competitive racing and recreational driving activities.
