About WRC Rally Islas Canarias

The WRC Rally Islas Canarias represents the first time the Canary Islands host a round of the FIA World Rally Championship on Gran Canaria. This "Golden Edition" celebrates the rally's 50th anniversary and brings world-class rallying action to Spain's volcanic island. The event showcases some of the most distinctive asphalt stages in the WRC calendar, combining technical precision with the unique character of Gran Canaria's roads.

Circuit Characteristics

The rally takes place entirely on asphalt surfaces across Gran Canaria. The volcanic tarmac provides exceptionally high grip levels, creating conditions unlike any other WRC round. The stages cover 322.04 kilometers of competitive distance spread across 18 special stages. Drivers face continuous sequences of hairpins, dramatic elevation changes, coastal sections, and mountain climbs through the island's interior.

The roads are remarkably smooth, allowing drivers to attack corners with circuit racing precision. The Valleseco-Artenara stage starts on twisty, technical sections before transitioning to narrow roads with sharp hairpins and a fast downhill finish. The Arucas-Teror stage begins with a donut section and progresses from wide, fast roads to narrower, technical passages with cambered turns. Other stages include Ingenio - Telde - Valsequillo, Santa Lucía - Agüimes, Tejeda - San Mateo, Mogán - La Aldea, Maspalomas, and Moya - Gáldar.

Competition Format

The rally base and service park will operate from the Gran Canaria Stadium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The event features a shakedown session in Santa Brígida, allowing teams to prepare their cars for the competitive stages. A new Super Special Stage takes place inside the Gran Canaria football stadium, featuring a route around the pitch with tight "mickey-mouse" sections and a donut element. This stadium stage recalls the spectacle of motorsport's greatest indoor competitions.

Participants and Categories

The WRC Rally Islas Canarias attracts top-tier teams and drivers competing in Rally1 machinery. The event also hosts the WRC2 and WRC3 Championships, providing opportunities for emerging talent and privateer teams. The entry list features manufacturer teams and independent competitors, all fighting for points in their respective championship battles.

Technical Challenges

The abrasive volcanic asphalt of Gran Canaria creates significant tire management demands. Teams must carefully balance performance with durability across the long stages. Rally1 cars feature hybrid powertrains, advanced aerodynamic packages, and sophisticated suspension systems. The high-grip surface and constant elevation changes place considerable stress on chassis components, braking systems, and power delivery.

The combination of heat, abrasive surfaces, and extended climbs tests both machinery and driver endurance. The smooth roads reward precision, but the technical nature of the stages punishes even minor mistakes. Engineers must optimize setup for the unique conditions of Gran Canaria, balancing grip exploitation with mechanical preservation.

Rally Heritage

The Rally Islas Canarias reaches its 50th running in its 2026 edition. The event began in 1977 as the "Rally El Corte Inglés" and quickly established itself in Spanish motorsport. The rally has been part of the Spanish Rally Championship, the European Rally Championship, and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge throughout its history. Spanish rallying legend Carlos Sainz holds the record for most victories with five consecutive wins between 1985 and 1989.

What Makes This Rally Special

Known as the "Circuit of the Atlantic," the WRC Rally Islas Canarias offers a pure asphalt challenge with grip levels rarely seen in modern rallying. The 2026 edition marks a significant milestone as the "Golden Edition" celebrating half a century of competition. The rally's location on Gran Canaria provides stunning scenery, from coastal vistas to mountain backdrops. The combination of smooth, high-grip tarmac and technical stage layouts creates a unique test for WRC competitors. This event promises to deliver close racing and strategic battles as teams and drivers adapt to the distinctive demands of Gran Canaria's volcanic roads.
