About Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit
The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit stands as Indonesia's premier motorsports facility on Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara. President Joko Widodo inaugurated this modern racing venue on November 12, 2021. The circuit sits inside the Mandalika Special Economic Zone, recognized as one of Indonesia's five "Super Priority Destinations." The location provides stunning views of hills, bays, and turquoise waters along the coastline. The circuit combines street-circuit characteristics with permanent track safety features, creating a distinctive racing environment that challenges drivers and entertains spectators.
Track Configuration and Design
The circuit measures 4.3 kilometers (2.67 miles) and features 17 corners. Drivers face 11 right-hand turns and 6 left-hand turns as they race clockwise around the track. The elevation changes by 20 meters across the layout, requiring precise skill and quick adaptation. Sector 1 contains fast straights and technical corners that create early overtaking opportunities. Sector 2 presents medium-speed curves that flow together smoothly. Sector 3 includes tight corners that lead into the main straight, measuring 723 meters in length. This final sector proves critical for overtaking maneuvers and defensive driving strategies.
Technical Standards and Surface
The circuit holds FIA Grade 2 and FIM Grade A homologation certifications. These ratings allow the facility to host elite motorsport competitions for both motorcycles and cars. The track width extends 15 meters throughout the circuit. The surface uses Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), an advanced material that strengthens the trajectory surface layer. This asphalt type delivers high grip levels, performing especially well in tropical weather conditions. Other prestigious circuits such as Silverstone, Dubai, and Phillip Island also employ this technology.
Racing Calendar and Major Events
The circuit launched its competitive schedule in 2021 by hosting the Asia Talent Cup and the World Superbike Championship. In 2022, MotoGP returned to Indonesia after 25 years, with the circuit conducting both a pre-season test and the Indonesian Grand Prix. The facility expanded its portfolio to include four-wheel racing categories. GT World Challenge Asia events began in 2023, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will start competition in 2025.
Facilities and Infrastructure
The pit complex extends 350 meters in length and contains 50 individual garages. The building uses a modular construction system across three floors. Team garages occupy the ground floor. The second floor houses the podium area, VVIP tribunes, and a media center. Additional support facilities fill the third floor. The Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) recognized this pit building as the fastest international-level pit facility constructed using modular methods. A medical center stands 100 meters from race control and includes three helipads for emergency response. The circuit accommodates nearly 200,000 fans, with 50,000 seats available in grandstands and general admission areas on surrounding hills.
Distinctive Features
The circuit features a hybrid design that merges street circuit elements with permanent facility safety. Some track sections function as public roads when racing events are not scheduled. The run-off areas at corners 15 and 16 display the "Subahnale" pattern, a traditional Sasak weaving design from local culture. The circuit development aims to increase tourism and generate economic growth for the Mandalika region. Riders praise the layout for its beauty, challenges, and flowing nature. The design focuses on sustainability by integrating with natural surroundings and protecting Lombok's coastal environment. Visitors can easily reach the circuit from Lombok International Airport, and luxury resorts surround the facility.
