About Shanghai E-Prix (Round 13)

The Shanghai E-Prix (Round 13) brings formula-e racing to the Shanghai International Circuit as part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This all-electric racing event takes place in Shanghai, China, as part of a double-header weekend. The 2026 edition continues the city's successful hosting of formula-e competition.

Shanghai International Circuit Layout

The Shanghai International Circuit features a distinctive design that resembles the Chinese character "上" (shang), meaning 'up above'. Hermann Tilke designed this facility, which opened in 2004. Formula-e uses a modified version of the Grand Prix layout for its races. The circuit measures 3.051 km and includes 12 corners.

This configuration combines high-speed straights with tight corners. Drivers find multiple overtaking opportunities throughout the lap. The Attack Mode activation zone sits on the outside of the long right-hander at Turn 2. This placement creates strategic decisions during the race.

Gen3 Evo Technology

The 2026 Shanghai E-Prix showcases the Gen3 Evo car in its final season before Gen4 regulations arrive. This car represents the current peak of electric racing technology. The Gen3 Evo accelerates from 0-100 kph in 1.86 seconds, which makes it 30% faster than current F1 cars in acceleration.

Performance Features

The Gen3 Evo delivers approximately 2% better performance compared to the previous Gen3 car. This translates to roughly 2 seconds faster on qualifying laps at circuits like Monaco. The car features a new aerodynamic body kit that promotes wheel-to-wheel racing.

All-Wheel Drive System

Formula-e introduces all-wheel drive (AWD) for the first time with the Gen3 Evo. Drivers can use AWD during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode. The Front Powertrain Kit (FPK) provides additional traction and handles regenerative braking at the front axle.

Tires and Efficiency

Hankook iON all-weather tires offer 5-10% more grip than previous versions. These tires contain 35% recycled and sustainable materials. The Gen3 Evo reaches a top speed of 200 mph and uses 600 kW of regenerative braking capacity. The car generates nearly 50% of its race energy through regeneration. The electric motor operates at over 95% efficiency.

Sustainability

The Gen3 Evo is the world's first net zero carbon race car in the world's first net zero carbon sport. Battery development prioritizes ethical and sustainable mining standards. This focus on sustainability aligns with formula-e's environmental mission.

Teams and Drivers

The 2026 Shanghai E-Prix features ten competitive teams on the grid. Andretti Formula E, Citroën Racing, Cupra Kiro, DS Penske, Envision Racing, Jaguar TCS Racing, Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team, Mahindra Racing, Nissan Formula E Team, and Porsche Formula E Team will compete at Shanghai International Circuit.

The driver lineup includes established stars and rising talent. Nick Cassidy moves to Citroën Racing, while António Félix Da Costa joins Jaguar TCS Racing. Jean-Éric Vergne also transfers to Citroën Racing. Nico Müller switches to Porsche Formula E Team. Felipe Drugovich joins Andretti for the season.

Other drivers include Taylor Barnard, Sébastien Buemi, Nyck De Vries, Jake Dennis, Lucas Di Grassi, Joel Eriksson, Mitch Evans, Maximilian Günther, Zane Maloney, Josep Maria Martí, Edoardo Mortara, Norman Nato, Oliver Rowland, Dan Ticktum, and Pascal Wehrlein.

Formula-E History in China

Formula-e first raced in China at Beijing in 2014 for the championship's inaugural event. The series later visited Hong Kong and Sanya. Shanghai joined the formula-e calendar in Season 10, and the positive reception secured its return for the 2026 season. The city provides a fitting location to showcase all-electric racing.

Shanghai's famous Bund offers views of the Lujianzui cityscape, creating an attractive setting for the race weekend. The circuit's unique "上" layout pays tribute to the host city. The adaptation of a well-known Formula 1 venue demonstrates formula-e's versatility and the appeal of all-electric racing on different circuit types.

The Shanghai E-Prix (Round 13) at Shanghai International Circuit promises intense competition as teams and drivers battle for championship points. The combination of advanced Gen3 Evo technology, a challenging circuit layout, and world-class drivers creates compelling racing action for fans of formula-e.
