About Round 7

Round 7 of the GT World Challenge Europe takes place at the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit in Nürburg, Germany. This Endurance Cup race brings together top GT3 teams and drivers for three hours of intense competition at one of Germany's most famous racing venues. The Nürburgring event represents a key moment in the 2026 championship season, with approximately 60 cars from ten major manufacturers competing for valuable points.

About the Race

The Nürburgring round of the gt-world-challenge-europe features a three-hour Endurance Cup race. The championship awards 25 points to the winner of each three-hour Endurance race, with points distributed to the top ten finishers. Teams field entries with three or four drivers to handle the demanding race distance. The GT World Challenge Europe uses a multi-class system that includes Pro, Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories, ensuring competitive racing across different driver experience levels.

The race format includes qualifying sessions to determine the starting grid, followed by the main race. This structure allows teams to demonstrate both single-lap pace and race-day strategy. The three-hour duration tests both car reliability and driver consistency.

The Circuit

The Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, also known as the GP-Strecke, measures 5.137 kilometers in length. The modern track features 17 turns that challenge drivers with a mix of high-speed corners and technical sections. The circuit includes an elevation change of 57 meters, adding another layer of difficulty to car setup and driver skill.

Located at Boulevard 1, Nürburg, 53520, Germany, the circuit sits in the Eifel Mountains. The track layout includes several distinctive sections: the Castrol-S, Mercedes Arena, Valvoline Kurve, Ford Kurve, Dunlop Kehre, Michael Schumacher S, Kumho Kurve, Bit Kurve, Veedol, and Coca Cola Kurve. Each corner presents unique challenges for teams and drivers.

The modern Grand Prix circuit was built in 1984 and received a major redesign in 2002 by Hermann Tilke. The current lap record stands at 1'55.996. This event uses only the Grand Prix circuit, not the longer Nordschleife track that forms part of the larger Nürburgring complex. The facility can accommodate 150,000 spectators.

Competing Teams and Drivers

The 2026 Nürburgring round attracts entries from the world's leading GT3 manufacturers. Expected participants include Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche. These manufacturers supply cars to professional racing teams that compete throughout the season.

The GT World Challenge Europe represents the highest level of customer GT3 racing globally. The series attracts factory-supported teams, professional outfits, and experienced privateer squads. Driver lineups typically mix experienced professionals with emerging talent, creating diverse competition across all categories.

The FIA categorizes drivers as Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze based on their experience and achievements. This system determines which classes teams can enter and helps balance competition. Professional drivers often compete in the Pro class, while the other categories provide opportunities for gentleman drivers and younger racers developing their careers.

Technical Regulations

All cars competing at Nürburgring must meet FIA GT3 homologation standards. These regulations require manufacturers to produce at least 300 road-legal versions of a base model before developing a GT3 racing variant. This rule ensures GT3 cars maintain a connection to production vehicles.

The SRO Motorsports Group, which organizes the championship, implements a Balance of Performance system. This system uses dynamometer testing, wind tunnel analysis, and track testing to equalize performance across different manufacturers. BoP adjustments affect engine power output and vehicle weight to create fair racing.

Car Specifications

GT3 cars feature various engine configurations. Teams use turbocharged V6 engines, naturally aspirated V8s, V10s, and V12s depending on the manufacturer. Power output typically falls between 500 and 600 horsepower, controlled by BoP regulations. Vehicle weight ranges from 1,200 to 1,350 kilograms, also subject to BoP adjustments.

These race cars can reach top speeds between 280 and 300 km/h depending on circuit characteristics. The regulations permit anti-lock braking systems and traction control but prohibit active aerodynamics. Pirelli supplies all teams with P Zero slick tires for dry conditions and Cinturato wet tires for rain. All competitors use identical 102 RON racing fuel to maintain equal conditions.

Supporting Race Series

The Nürburgring weekend features multiple racing series alongside the main GT World Challenge Europe event. The GT2 European Series provides a platform for the newer, more powerful GT2 category cars. The Lamborghini Super Trofeo, a one-make series for Lamborghini race cars, adds to the on-track action.

The 2026 season introduces the GT3 Revival Series, which showcases classic GT3 machinery from 2006 to 2013. This new series divides cars into Gen I (2006-2009) and Gen II (2010-2013) categories, with both Pro-Am and Am classes available. The Revival Series celebrates the history of GT3 racing while providing competitive opportunities for older race cars.

History and Heritage

The Nürburgring has hosted motorsport competition since 1927, when the original Nordschleife track opened. The modern Grand Prix circuit joined the complex in 1984, providing a contemporary racing facility alongside the historic Nordschleife. The GP-Strecke has welcomed various international racing series over the decades.

The GT World Challenge Europe and its predecessor series, the Blancpain Endurance Series, have included the Nürburgring on the calendar since 2014. The circuit has produced memorable races, with recent editions running without Full-Course Yellow or Safety Car periods, demonstrating the track's challenging nature and driver discipline.

The Nürburgring also hosts the famous Nürburgring 24 Hours race, held annually since 1970 on a combined layout using both the GP-Strecke and Nordschleife. This endurance race has become one of the most prestigious events in GT racing. The facility's long motorsport tradition makes it a special venue for competitors and fans throughout the racing community.
